Sewing for charity

If you have extra time and a stash of fabric, there are children in need all over the world. While browsing Pinterest, you can find many organizations that are looking for people who can sew and contribute items for children. Type in "sewing for charity" and a wealth of information pops up. The projects are numerous and encompass a wide variety of skills. You can sew cancer pillowcases, pillowcase dresses, coats for dogs, clothes for preemies, aprons, quilts, and toys. The organizations are numerous and you can pick a favorite or sew for many.

One such site is called Sew Scrumptious, and this provides pretty dresses for little girls around the world. These are simple and made from pillowcases and a tutorial and pattern is included. Girls in countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, Haiti, and India may have their first pretty dress and as the website says "every girl should own at least one pretty dress." They are still looking for people to make dresses and the site includes pictures of the girls and gives plenty of information so that you know where your efforts are being sent. And, they need shorts for the boys! This organization has a facebook and twitter page, as well as an email address to get you started.

Threads online magazinehttp://www.threadsmagazine.com/item/20556/what-kind-of-charity-project-are-you-sewing has a great article about charity sewing that includes links and information as well as readers comments. This can give you great ideas for charities to sew for but also might just spark that creative thought for a charity project you could start.

Nancy's Notions, a sewing site, http://www.nancynotions.com/category/sewing+with+nancy.do includes a section on charity sewing, with free downloads for dress and short patterns, a free blanket pattern, and a free download for a superhero cape pattern. The site also includes a contest, Sewing Weekend Charity Quilt Challenge with a prize of gift certificates up to $500. And, there are additional free patterns for hats, a Fleece Preemie Cuddler, a Walker Caddy, and Cozy Shoulders Fleece Wrap.

If you love to sew for babies, Threads of Love is a non-profit that supplies burial gowns and NICU sets. It includes patterns for gowns and sets, and also has a pattern for a NICU vest and hat for those very tiny bundles that need so much care at the start of life. There are preemie baby booties and a beautifully smocked Preemie Bonnet pattern. This site will grab your heart!

Think of the children in need everywhere in our world, here and overseas. So many need help. There are probably children in your own community who do not have a warm hat or a special "blankie", or even a doll baby. Find a project that touches your heart and SEW!
