According to Monday's Tampa Bay Times, a Pinellas County, Fla., man was arrested on a charge of cruelty to animals after authorities discovered his grievously neglected senior dog.

Rocky, a 17-year-old mixed breed dog, was found wandering through a trailer court complex on Saturday morning. Responding deputies determined that the emaciated, flea-ridden dog belonged to 38-year-old Jason L. Aldridge, who had not even noticed that his elderly dog was missing.

The area where Rocky had been living was described as "deplorable" - covered in urine and feces and lacking food or water. A bag of food which was located was filled with bugs.

The elderly dog's fur was thin, he weighed a meager 47-pounds, and he had a huge tumor hanging between his rear legs. Veterinarians who examined the dog later that day determined that humane euthanasia was the only option.

Aldridge blamed the dog's pitiful condition, and lack of veterinary care, on his own lack of money. Animal control had been called out to the check on the same dog back in 2012 - even at that time, the dog was found to be "a little on the thin side," though he weighed nearly 20 pounds more than when he was euthanized on Saturday.

Aldridge was booked into jail and released a short time later.
