The National Westher Service - Storm Prediction Center has just issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch for the Rockford Metro Area until 9 PM CDT. See below for complete watch details from the SPC.
Storms have started to form in central Wisconsin and will move southward into Northern Illinois during the late afternoon hours. Storms will be possible for cloud to ground lightning, large hail, damaging winds, and torrential downpours.
A Heat Advisory continues until this evening. Currently temperatures are in the middle 90s with mid 70s dew points and heat indices are already above 100 degrees in most spots. At 2PM it was 94 degrees in Rockford with 100 degree heat index, and DeKalb, IL was at 91 with a 79 degree dew point for a heat index of 108F. All of this heat and humidity ahead of the approaching cold front will aid in the development of the storms.
