Several voluntary recalls have been reported by the FDA this past week, almost all involving possible Salmonella contamination, most involving treats using chicken, and spanning several brands.
There has been an ongoing problem with chicken jerky treats since 2007 when the AVMA issued a caution, and once again chicken jerky treats are part of these recalls.
For bird owners, Salmonella contamination of parsley flakes used in bird treats and foods from a particular supplier has prompted two companies to voluntarily recall products.
United Pet Group, Inc., just yesterday announced that it has voluntarily withdrawn a limited quantity of the products: Ultra Blend Gourmet Food for Parakeets, Cotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Parakeets, Cotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Canaries and Finches, and Cotrition Grains & Greens Nutritional Supplement for Cockatiels. Kaytee Products is recalling several bird treats and greens items due to possible contamination from the parsley flakes.
Hy-Vee, Inc. issued a voluntary recall of certain bags of Hy-Vee dog food due to elevated levels of a chemical contaminant commonly found in corn. This recall primarily involves Hy-Vee Complete Dog Complete Nutrition products in the green bag.
The broadest recall of treats is the one by Kasel Associates Industries Inc. which is recalling all pet treats it manufactured from April 20 through Sept. 19, 2012 due to potential contamination with Salmonella. Kasel issued three previous recall notices for specific products manufactured during this time period. This involves chicken jerky and other chicken products, some beef products and salmon jerky spanning brands including Boots & Barkley (Target), Colorado Naturals, and Nature's Deli. These are distributed through Petco, Sam's Club, Menards, Nutri-Vet, Costco, BIXBI and TBDDS. Click here for the full list of products being recalled.
The Honest Kitchen announced that it is voluntarily recalling five lots of its Verve, Zeal and Thrive pet food products produced between August and November 2012 and sold nationwide in the US and Canada via retail stores, mail order and online.
Nutri-Vet, LLC. of Boise, ID is voluntarily recalling its Nutri-Vet and NutriPet Chicken Jerky Products.
Nature's Variety has announced a voluntary recall of one batch of Instinct® Raw Organic Chicken Formula with a "Best if Used By" date of 10/04/13. This recall is not related to the Salmonella contamination, but to cmall pieces of clear plastic that found their way into the packaging which could cause choking.
A voluntary recall is intended to prevent animals from becoming ill when a contaminant is identified. However, if you have used any of the products and your pet exhibits signs of Salmonella infection which include becoming lethargic, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product(s) and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

You should be able to return the product to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
