The second year of the 2011-2012 session in the Georgia General Assembly is underway, and there are several competing gun bills pending, all of which could affect your right to bear arms. The usual suspects have introduced a bill that would require training classes of all applicants for a Georgia Weapons Carry License. There are two bills pending that would remove many of Georgia's places off limits from the law. One bill includes an attempt by state legislators to exempt themselves and other elected officials from the gun laws that apply to the rest of us, sparking angry responses from many Georgians and even some legislators (even though this is not the first time somebody at the Capitol has attempted this). There is a bill pending to repeal the law banning silencers on hunting weapons, and another seeking to repeal Georgia's requirement of a license to carry a weapon, while leaving an optional license in place for those wanting reciprocity with other states when they travel, mimicking recent similar laws in Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming. In addition there are other bills likely to be filed soon, including one that would address carrying firearms on college campuses.
In the coming weeks, the Atlanta Gun Rights Examiner column will review each of these bills in detail, and of course keep you informed on their status as they make their way through the General Assembly.
