Seventh-ranked Syracuse moves to 14-1(2-0) with a win at USF

The seventh ranked Syracuse Orange men’s basketball team struggled against the South Florida Bulls on the road today winning 55-44.

One telling stat at one point in the game? Christmas and Keita both with four fouls and SU had shot only two foul shots in the game. That’s beyond ‘interesting’ in anyone’s book. Brandon Triche was the hot hand today along with CJ Fair and James Southerland. The Cuse held a 47-42 lead with a time-out at the 3:44 mark after two missed free throws followed by a defensive stand that saw the Bulls fail to get a shot off in time. A huge 3 by Southerland out of the time-out was enormous and was followed by yet another shot clock violation by USF. A missed 3 by Southerland, a missed put back by Fair and a held ball kept possession with SU and an up and under move off a drive by Triche extended the lead. This is the Triche they need and it gave them a 10-point lead with 1:24 to go.

It was the upper-classmen that won the game today and this team needs that if they want to go deep into the tourney come March. A hard fought win on the road will perhaps help this team at that time.

On a weekend that saw several upsets in the Big East conference, Syracuse will gladly take this one to the bank and head on to play Providence in the Dunkin Donuts Center on Wednesday night at 7 PM.
