Saturday, February 2, was an intense evening for Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. Though the music venue is one of the state's most popular, rarely do they ever host a sold out show. However, Sevendust, Lacuna Coil and opening band Avatar managed to fill the house to max capacity with the opening night of their tour.
Sevendust is a heavy metal/hard rock band hailing out of Atlanta, Georgia. The group has been together for almost 20 years and produced eight studio albums since their foundation. Members consist of Lajon Witherspoon (vocals), Clint Lowery (lead guitar), John Connolly (rhythm guitar), Vince Hornsby (bass) and Morgan Rose (drums). Since their conception, the band has only undergone one temporary lineup change when Lowery left in 2004 to join his brother Clint Lowery in a new band called Dark New Day. Guitarist Sonny Mayo replaced Lowery, until he announced his return to Sevendust in March of 2008. Sevendust is currently in the final stages of recording their ninth studio album Black Out the Sun, which is set for release on March 26, this year. The album's first single "Decay" received it's debut radio air time on January 22.
Accompanying Sevendust on the current tour is a gothic metal band from the other side of the world. Lacuna Coil originated in Milan, Italy, in 1994, and released their sixth studio album Dark Adrenaline on January 23, 2012. Lacuna Coil has a unique member lineup in that they feature not just one, but two vocalists - Cristina Scabbia (female vocals) and Andrea Ferro (male vocals). The other members consist of Cristiano "Pizza" Migliore (guitar), Marco "Maus" Biazzi (guitar), Marco Coti Zelati (bass) and Cristiano "Criz" Mozzati (drums). Biazzi is not currently touring with the band due to an arm injury, but is expected to return during the summer. Mozzati recently welcomed a newborn and has a fill in drummer for the tour while he takes a break to help out his wife.
Swedish melodic death metal band Avatar has also joined forces with Sevendust and Lacuna Coil as the opening band on the tour. The five piece band was formed in 2001 and consists of members Johannes Eckerström (vocals), Jonas Jarlsby (guitar), Tim Öhrström (guitar), Henrik Sandelin (bass) and John Alfredsson (drums). Though the band has released four studio albums and performed on many European tours as a supporting act, this is their first tour in the United States. Avatar has a very unique stage presence, which will likely enthrall and captivate many new fans across the country.
North Carolina was one of the few states lucky enough to host these three bands again, as they have traveled to the east to play a show at Hooligan's in Jacksonville, this evening. The bands will continue touring across the country together through early March. Avatar will then drop off the tour, however Sevendust and Lacuna Coil will be joining Coal Chamber for another tour.
