Seven purchases for summer caregiving

It's summer most everywhere. Make sure you've got a percale fitted sheet on that hospital bed. 39x80" fitted sheets (that will also work on a 84" bed if the mattress is not too thick) are available separately at the Company Store. Get a 300 thread count. Sateen, jersey and other enhancements may wrinkle and/or feel too slippery.

Spend long hours standing at someone's bedside? Get a small GelPro mat and save your back. They're now available as small as 13x17.

Helping someone with neck issues? Try a Roho pillow -- unlike their seat cushions, reasonably priced. Get the kind with separate valves for the front and back.

Some "sitters" feel cold even in summer, and especially in the air conditioning that the rest of us need. Buy a Soft Heat Triple Rib blanket from the Warming Store to use as a wheelchair or recliner throw, assuming your sitter has enough sensation for safety under a heated device.

Showers and baths may be difficult or impossible as conditions progress. Keep your patient clean with Sage Products disposable cloths, available in different thicknesses and types, including Deodorant and Fragrance Free.

Mattress getting old? If the bed has a foam overlay, turn it with the seasons. If not, get one. For most people, 2" is a good thickness. FineWebStores has a good selection.

What about a companion animal? Research links pets with wellbeing. Many shelters are overloaded with animals this time of year, who need a good home. Stop by your local no-kill shelter and pick up a new family member. If you're not ready to commit to pet ownership, consider becoming a foster pet parent, which many shelters and rescue groups also need.
