Seven prison guards are out on bond Wednesday after being charged in the brutal beating of an inmate who is now confined to a wheel chair.
Mr. Terrance Byrant Dean, 29, was serving a sentence for armed robbery at the Macon State Prison when Mr. John Bankhead, spokesman for the Georgia Bureau of Investigations, said he attacked a prison guard on Dec. 16.
A special team responded to the attack and allegedly used excessive force to subdue the inmate.
“He was hospitalized for an extended period,” Mr. Bankhead said of Mr. Dean. “Now he’s in a wheelchair.”
It’s unclear how long the assault lasted and whether any of the seven guards used weapons. It’s also unclear if Mr. Dean will have to be in the chair for the rest of his life.
Ms. Gwendlyn Hogan, a Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman, did not return a phone call Wednesday about the details of the assault.
Mr. Dean's sister, Ms. Latasha Montgomery, told 13 WMAZ she wasn't allowed to see her brother for more than two weeks after the incident.
She said when she finally visited her brother at the Georgia Diagnostic Prison in Jackson, it was the first time she had ever seen him cry.
"He couldn't talk, he didn't want to walk for us because he couldn't even walk," Ms. Montgomery told 13WMAZ while choking back tears.
She said her brother has no memory of how the incident occurred.
Prison officials asked the GBI on Jan. 5 to investigate the incident and on Monday agents arrested each of the guards when they arrived to work.
The guards are Mr. Christopher Hall; Mr. Ronald Lach; Mr. Derrick Wimbrush; Mr. Willie Redden; Mr. Darren Douglas Griffin, Mr. Kerry Bolden, and Mr. Delton Rushin.
Agents charged each guard with aggravated battery and violation of oath of office in the assault, Mr. Bankhead said.
