Losing weight is a goal for many people and especially as the summer season approaches. As with any goal that you have, the best way to get there is to make a plan and follow it. Setting goals for your weight loss can be tricky, though, because while you don’t want to underestimate yourself, you don’t want to make goals that you can’t possible meet, either. The following are 5 tips that will help you to make weight loss goals that you can achieve.
Tip #1-Set short-term goals. It is extremely important that you set small goals that you will be able to achieve on your path towards your big goal, which will take longer to accomplish. These shorter goals will keep you motivated along the way and encourage you to keep working towards that final goal that you are longing to meet.
Tip #2-Set long-term goals. Long-term goals are important, too, even though they are going to take more time and be more challenging to get to. Say, for instance, that your goal is to lose 40 pounds. Breaking that up into increments of ten pounds or having measurements that you want to get to along the way will keep you looking ahead, even as you are meeting your short-term goals, and keeping you from settling for “good enough” while not really ever getting to your true goal. And, be sure that you do have a definite goal at the end. If you surpass it, that’s great, but if you don’t have one at all, it will be very difficult for you to not give up before you are really where you wanted to get.
Tip #3-Keep a weight loss journal. Get a journal that you want to use, whether it’s a notebook or a diary of sorts, and begin to track your goals and accomplishments regarding your weight. Start with writing out your goals, both long and short term, and then write a little something each day regarding how you are feeling and what you’re working on. When you get frustrated or overwhelmed, you can go back and see what you’ve accomplished and be encouraged.
Tip #4-Be realistic, but still optimistic. Try to set goals that are going to take work to achieve and which will really get you where you want to be regarding your weight, but don’t set goals that are unreasonable and which there is no chance of succeeding at. Don’t underestimate yourself, but don’t doom yourself to failure, either.
Tip #5-Set up a reward system. From the time that people are small children, they begin to respond to reward systems. With each goal, decide on a reward that you will give to yourself when you have achieved it. Rewards are a great motivator when things get tough!
Losing weight is not always easy, but it is possible. Try to keep in mind that the weight didn’t occur overnight and it’s not going to disappear that way, either. Follow the above suggestions and be patient, you can achieve your weight loss goals and become a healthier and happier you!
