Setting Smart Goals For Success

Goals are a path for success and successful people set SMART goals. A successful person envisions the end destination and then lays out a plan for how she is going to get there. Did you know that 50% of people that join a gym or committ to exercising will stop going to the gym or exercising after 6 months? Maybe that statistic is so high because these people had no goals or had unrealistic goals and became frustrated when those goals could not be met. When starting a venture like losing weight or exercising a person needs to set goals; however, these goals need to be SMART.

Setting SMART goals is an important piece of of the puzzle for success in losing weight and improving health through exercise. SMART goals set a person up for success rather than failure. When setting the goal think SMART:

  • Specific.
  • Measurable
  • Attainable
  • Realistic
  • Timely

SMART goals are personalized and lay out  a plan on how the person is going to travel to that goal.  If the goal is run a mini marathon, that goal is vague and may be overwhelming and so intimiditating that the person may have set him/herself up for failure right out of the gate.  If a person hasn't exercised in 10 years,  the goal to run a mini marthon may not be realistic and attainable. To make that goal realistic and attainable it may sound something like this: " I want to run the Indianapolis 500 Mini Marathon in May of 2010 by progressivly increasing my mileage and time in the gym and following the training plan designed by my personal trainer". This goal is specific as to what race the person wants to run in, It is a measurable goal, it is attainable and realistic for a person to progressivly work into this amount of running in the time frame of one year.

A successful person first envisions the end destination and then lays out a time frame and a plan on how that destination is going to reached.  When setting a goal think SMART: Specific,  Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, Timely.  SMART goals set a person up for success and once a goal is met confidence will be gained to do more and from there, the sky is the limit.
