Tomorrow morning, athletes of all ages and paddling craft will muster at King Harbor’s Seaside Lagoon in Redondo Beach when the Lanakila Outrigger Canoe Club hosts the 2014 Lanakila Classic. The day’s event features three separate races; kicking off at 8:30 with a mini course for kids inside King Harbor followed by a five mile short course and a 10 mile long course. All manner of paddling craft (Paddleboards, SUP, OC1, OC2 and Surfskis) are welcomed to the short course outside the breakwater in the Santa Monica Bay, while the long course is limited to OC1, OC2 and Surfskis.
The Lanakila Classic is part of the Winter Race Series hosted by local outrigger canoe clubs throughout Southern California and is well attended by regional paddlers. Although its origins are in the outrigger community, Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP) has quickly become a significant contributor to the Winter Series events. As a result, it is not uncommon to see several of the region’s top professional SUP athletes at Winter Series races as they prepare for SUP specific events featuring cash prizes later in the year.
For those new to paddle sports, local events such as the Lanakila Classic are a fantastic way to test the water and meet others involved in the different paddling disciplines. The skills used in most of paddling sports complement one another and athletes regularly practice one to cross train for another, particularly during the off season. Unique to the sporting community, athletes routinely grant fellow paddlers the opportunity to try out their equipment before and after the races giving them a chance to get a feel for the different makes and models of paddle craft. This is particularly common among stand up paddlers where the sport’s meteoric growth has driven a seemingly endless number of board and paddle manufacturers.
