In Matthew 5:13-16 it is written: "Ye are the salt of the earth; but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? It is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Ye are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do men light a candle, and put it under a bushel, but on a candlestick, and it giveth light unto all that are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven”.

Our Lord Jesus is saying many things in this passage. Jesus’s disciples and all Christians are expected to reveal the Light of the Gospel to the earth, and all those who inhabit it. Jesus referred to Himself as the Light to illume the Apostles and disciples as they offer the Light of the Gospel to the world. This Light will shine before men to disclose the good works of God and to guide humanity in worshipping the True God.

The Sermon on the Mount was a very special event we read about in the Book of Matthew. It is a sacred time in which we hear from our Lord Jesus, the direct ways to live our lives. Jesus depicts it in a very clear manner, and we must acknowledge what our Lord said. The Light, which is our Lord, the Word of the Gospel, should not be taken for granted.

Jesus is essentially telling us to let His Light shine to all those around us. Do not hide your love for the Lord or keep your faith buried within your heart. What is the point of praying to God in private and asking for His help, if we cannot proclaim Him always and everywhere?

Jesus gave the Light to the Apostles and disciples, who then have delivered it to the rest of humanity (us). In order to keep the Light of our Lord alive, we must act according to the Light. In other words, we must do right by our brothers, and care for one another as we would for ourselves. We must help each other and be careful what we say or do to each other.

Be strong with the Lord and keep Him close always. It is only through our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, that we can know about this Light. The secret is that we ALL have the Light. It is up to us to realize it and accept our Lord Jesus’s Light that He placed in all of us. It is up to us to at last open our eyes and ears to our Lord.

Are your eyes and ears opened yet?
