This is my last article in this series. I have posted various articles on the best places to visit before/after/during Rockies games. It was an eight part series and covered the following:
1. Best places to eat before a Rockies game
2. Best places to celebrate a Rockies win
3. Best places to park (or other alternatives)
4. Best corners or street vendors to hit up before entering Coors Field
5. Best food inside Coors Field
6. Best seats in Coors Field
7. Other fun things to do at Coors Field
8. Other great places to watch Rockies game, if you can’t get sunburned in person
It is game day and you can’t get to the game in time for first pitch so you need to find a TV to watch it. You do not want to watch it at your house, rather out with other Rockies fans and beer flowing from a tap. Where to go? We will keep this to local places only (except 1).
I will give one warning: I have lived in Aurora and Parker my entire 24 years in Denver so this list will probably be a bit biased towards those who live south of Denver.
- JD’s Bait Shop – You canNOT find a better deal in Denver when it comes to food. You can get a cheeseburger and fries at JD’s for about $4.50, and it is a really good cheeseburger. Their chili is hot, spicy and my favorite chili ever. They have TV’s everywhere and the Rockies will be on plenty of them and the staff is always more than happy to change the channel if requested. You might even see a sports celebrity here from time to time. Being that it is so close to the Avalanche’s practice facility I have seen Tony Granato and his staff there plenty of times.
- College Inn – I actually love any of the B.U.F.F. Brothers bars. They are all great for food and drinks. I like College Inn the best because it has a some sentimental value for me as I used to hang out there a lot in my early 20’s to play billiards in a league with a bunch of my buddies. Check out any of the B.U.F.F. Bros places: FuNuGyz (Parker), Dirk’s (Centennial), Gibby’s (Aurora) and Pilfer’s (Lakewood). Try their breakfast burrito and get it “hot” and make sure you have plenty of water.
- Falcon Brewery – On Main Street in Parker this little brewery has fantastic beer and a small cozy feel to it. They have a couple nice sized flat screen TVs for watching the Rockies and with their beer you might want to be within walking distance to get home or have Yellow Cab on speed dial. They have a sampler option for their beer (eight small glasses of beer to taste) so you can decide which you like best. Once you have that figured out, sit back and drink hoppy goodness.
- Old Chicago – I had to include this chain on my list (it was started in Boulder after all). While all the other bars are 100% Denver this place needs to be mentioned anyway. With 100 beers to choose from it is a beer drinkers heaven. They have unbelievable pizza and calzones and TVs all over the restaurant. Great place to watch the Rox. (add this to the list of great chains started in Colorado along with Chipotle and Quizno's).
- Dewey’s – Two locations to choose from with one in Highlands Ranch and the other in Littleton. Dewey’s has really good burgers and sort of a higher class feel to it. With numerous TV’s in their bar area, pool tables, video games and other bar activities there is plenty to do when the Rockies are blowing out their competition.
- Sobo 151 – I have to mention Sobo 151 on South Broadway because I love the beer they have. While it is a bit out of the way for me (if I am going that far I might as well go to the game) it might be perfect for some. It is a Czech bar owned by Philip who used to be in the same pool league I mentioned prior. While he used to wipe the floor with me this bar is fantastic. Lots of imported beer from the Czech Republic. It is a hockey bar, but during the summer they will certainly turn on the Rockies if the NHL playoffs are over. Really good food, I recommend the Schnitzel and the home fried potatoes and ask which kind of Dunkel they have imported. The Dunkel is a dark beer and it is very tasty.
With Fox Sports Rocky Mountain broadcasting 150 games this year and all of them in HD it is hard to get off of the couch to go watch a game when you can watch it so perfectly on your 78 inch hi-def at home, but if you want to go out and socialize, choose one of the bars above. You will not be disappointed.
Thanks for reading my series and I hope I steer you in the right direction and you can enjoy the summer of 2009 and the Colorado Rockies!
