Confessed serial killer, Israel Keyes, admittedly murdered eleven, but as many as 30 additional victims are suspected, according to HLN's Nancy Grace. The eleven year killing spree ended March 12, 2012, when 34 year-old Keyes was arrested for the murder of Alaskan barista Samantha Koenig, only 18 years-old. According to hours of FBI interrogation interviews, it became apparent the serial killer wanted to be prosecuted and sent to death row as soon as possible, not wanting trials and media coverage, in order to spare his young daughter any "shame". Israel Keyes committed suicide in his Alaska jail cell on December 2, 2012. His robbery, arson, kidnapping and murder rampage across the U.S. ranged from 2001 and March 2012. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) is seeking your help in locating other victims of Keyes, by tracking his whereabouts from state to state during his "killing years".
According to the FBI, Keyes lived in Washington state from 2001 to March 2007, at which time he moved to Alaska. While living in Alaska, Keyes, who said he could most relate to convicted serial killer, Ted Bundy, traveled the U.S. extensively while working as a general contractor. FBI Special Agent, Jolene Goeden, said,
We are letting the public know the types of cars he rented, towns he visited, campgrounds he frequented. Anything that might spur someone’s memory could help us. We have his DNA.
Israel Keyes committed armed robberies to help fund his travels and killing "kits" he hid across the country, prior to some of his murders. The kits, or "caches", contained weapons, money, and other items used to dispose of bodies. In interviews, he described several remote locations that he frequented to look for victims (that he didn't know), like parks, campgrounds, trail heads, cemeteries, boating areas, etc. Keyes indicated his victims are male and female, ranging in age from late teens to the elderly.
Keyes stated his murders occurred in less than 10 states but did not disclose all of the locations. Keyes described crossing into multiple states during the abduction, murder, and disposal of a victim. It's possible in some cases Keyes abducted a victim from one state, transported them to another state where he or she was murdered, and potentially drove them to a third state to dispose of the body. Keyes admitted to burglarizing 20 to 30 homes throughout the United States and talked about committing arson as a means to cover up a homicide, all according to the FBI.
While nothing will bring the victims back to their loved ones, your tips could help bring them some peace and closure. Maybe you remember seeing Keyes, or you were somewhere you remember his voice, perhaps his dialect triggers something. If the videos or map regarding Israel Keyes’ movements spark any memories, or if you have any information regarding Keyes, please contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI, or submit a tip online.
