Sergio's Tale: Purrs from the Heart says goodbye to injured kitten

Just last week, we brought you the story of Sergio – the young kitten rescued from Chicago with no use of his back legs. Purrs from the Heart had mounted a fundraising drive for surgery for Sergio in hopes that he would be able to walk one day.

Sergio was born without muscle mass in his back legs. There was webbing within the bone area in the back of his legs and his paws were deformed. On Valentine’s Day, he had surgery and hopes were high for the young kitten.

Tonight, we have sad news to report. Little Sergio made it through surgery but in the past few days his condition started to worsen. Monday, he stopped eating and was rushed to the vet. On Tuesday, he died. He was just not strong enough after the surgery to make it and passed away.

Although the news is sad and heartbreaking to all that followed his story, the good news is that, in the end, Sergio was loved. The kitten that had been fending for himself on the streets had a whole fan club from his family, rescuers and followers to a whole support team at the vet. According to Sherry Przybylski from the rescue -

Although Sergio was not with us long, his impact on my life is forever. Up until Monday, he slept right next to me in his cage as we worked little by little on his legs. Sergio, from what I know of, received his first kiss from us, his first hot meal, his first warm blanket, his first loving words, his first smile as I looked at him, his first roof over his head, his first person who loved him…

On one of the colder days of the winter, Sergio wasn’t alone on the streets with no one to love him. He had a whole fan club following his story, pulling for him every step of the way. Today, we morn the sweet, spunky cat that pulled us all together.

In rescue, we are drawn to the story of the underdog (or in this case, undercat). People who never met raise funds and pull for a dog or cat that is very sick or injured. In the end, every animal should have a happy ending. Unfortunately, that doesn’t always happen. Some are too sick or injured to recover.

In the case of Sergio, he may not have had a long life. But, he knew love and a happy family his last few weeks and he touched our hearts along the way.
