According to a report from Miguel Rivera at BoxingScene.com on Thursday, Oct. 3, lineal middleweight champion Sergio Martinez is shooting down any ideas of a possible rematch with former champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Last Sept. in Las Vegas, inside of the Thomas & Mack Center, Martinez dominated Chavez over the course of eleven rounds. In the twelfth and final frame, Chavez rallied to drop Martinez and nearly knock him out before ultimately losing a unanimous decision.

Chavez returned to the ring last weekend in Carson, Calif., where he won a controversial unanimous decision over Bryan Vera over ten rounds. Chavez vs. Vera was contested at a catch weight of 173 pounds, as the champion from Mexico stated during fight week that he wouldn’t be able to make the super middleweight limit that the bout was contracted at.

Martinez’s advisor Sampson Lewkowicz went into detail as to why Martinez is now disinterested in a second encounter with Chavez.

“Martinez called me and said Chavez Jr. does not deserve a rematch,” stated Lewkowicz. “We know that he will not make the weight. He does not deserve a rematch because he has no respect for the sport. Bryan Vera deserves Martinez more than Chavez. For Martinez, Vera is the official winner of the fight.”
