Sergeant William C. Stacey, 23, of King, Wash. died Tuesday while conducting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was a mortar man assigned to 2nd Battalion, 4th Marine Regiment. Sergeant Stacey was the fourth Marine from Camp Pendleton to be killed since the beginning of the year.
Sergeant Stacey was born in Hartford, Connecticut and lived the majority of his life in the Seattle, Washington area. Stacey joined the Marine Corps in 2007, this was his second deployment to Afghanistan.
His personal service awards include the Purple Heart, Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, Navy Unit Commendation, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with two bronze star devices, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with silver star device, and the NATO Medal-ISAF Afghanistan.
According to a Marine spokesman, Stacey's body is scheduled to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware late Wednesday before being taken to Arlington National Cemetery to be buried.
