Serco Group, a subsidiary of UK Based Serco Group plc, has informed the state’s Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation that it may lay off 480 people across the state of Maryland, according to today’s article in the Baltimore Business Journal. Serco Group, a defense contractor with local headquarters in Reston, VA, is uncertain whether these cuts will be permanent at this stage. If the layoffs occur, they are expected to impact 308 employees at the Columbia location, 27 employees at Aberdeen Proving Ground, 82 employees in Price George’s County, and 61 employees in Montgomery County. Serco Group has 400 contracts, and employs 9,000 in North America according to its website.

In addition to the anticipated cuts at Serco, Frederick Memorial Hospital has announced its plans to eliminate local jobs, according to yesterday’s Frederick News Post. The article states that layoffs are due in part to a decline in revenues, reduced admissions, and a desire to decrease expenses over time. The hospital has a goal to reduce $6 million in operating expenses, and while they have been able to initiate some cost savings by, among other things, increasing efficiency in areas such as supplies and contract services, the decrease in patient volumes has necessitated a reduction in the labor force at this time.
