The “Sequestration” is happening to “reduce the $4 trillion US deficit by $85 billion”. If you haven’t heard of it, or you’re not affected by it, then you should be very grateful. Some federal employees are facing ‘unpaid time-off’ by forfeiting a day’s pay, once-a-week, for the next 2 weeks or until September or October of 2013. They are the victims of the “2013 Sequestration”.
According to the Huffington Post, the act was set to begin March 1 at 11:59 p.m. The Sequester is a set of automatic spending cuts put into law by the Budget Control Act. Signed by President Barack Obama in August 2011, that legislation raised the debt ceiling and sought to apply pressure on Congress to come up with a longer term plan for deficit reduction.
“We owe, we owe, but there will be ‘no work’ for some to go.” There was a time when the dreaded “Pink Slip” was delivered to numerous employees and there are some government jobs that are plagued with the same doom today. According to the Huffington Post, some workers have been given the proverbial ‘boot’ because of the recent “Sequestration”. “The Sequester will affect government spending across the board. The military will see $550 billion in cuts, drawing funds away from national security and military operations. On the domestic side, cuts will affect health care, education, law enforcement, disaster relief, unemployment benefits, non-profit organization funds, scientific research and more.”
This writer has friends who work for the government in NC. Their positions as “Veterans Service Representatives (VSR)” have not been affected. Another friend in the Jacksonville, Florida area, who is working as an “Industrial Hygienist”, has been notified of the proposed upcoming cuts. If people are depending upon their income to make or break their household spending, then this act could be devastating.
