Sequester's impact on higher education

Sequestration, "the permanent cancellation of budgetary resources" will affect lower income college students. US NEWS and WORLD REPORT says the long term affects of sequestration aren't clear, but in the short term, the cuts run deep.

For example, work study program are being cut. TRIO and GEAR UP programs are being cut. 70,000 students are estimated to borrow more money for college since work-study grants will be cut by $49 million. The sequester will also cut $37 million in supplemental educational opportunity grants for undergrads.

Student loan fees will rise, but Pell grants are protected in the attempt to balance and control the federal budget. In all, the millions due to be cut as a result of the sequester may not sound like a lot. But not many students are hired as a result of work study programs.
