Sequester cuts have already hit Spokane. Head Start programs in Spokane could suffer as the politics of Washington, D.C. cause local kids to suffer. As reported by KREM on Friday (March 1), the sequester cuts would eliminate $400,000 from the local operating budget within the Heads Start program.
This is problematic because it means quite a few families could be forced out of the programs. David Colburn, Director of Program Services, stated that, "We'll also lose money for the child care food program. And there may be dollars lost from our partnership with the Spokane School District for serving kids with disabilities."
What might be even worse is that these budget cuts could cost some Head Start workers their jobs. According to state numbers, there are 900 families in the Spokane Head Start program and about a thousand more on the waiting list alone. Now local families within the program could be receiving some very bad news if things don't get settled almost 3,000 miles from Spokane.
While the arguments in the "other" Washington continue about who is at fault for the budget crisis, the sequester cuts are about to be felt around the country.
