September means school is in full swing, but it doesn't have to be all work and no play. Here's a taste of what's going on in Miami this September.

  • International Ballet Festival of Miami, August 30, 2014 through September 27, 2014

The 19th International Ballet Festival of Miami (IBFM), presented by the Miami Hispanic Ballet Company, is the largest ballet festival in South Florida, attracting more than 200 artists from over 20 national and international ballet companies and amazing South Florida with their artistic and dancing prowess. Through the use of literature, film, art and live performances, the festival showcases dance across various cultures. In addition to multiple performances, IBFM also provides opportunities for local dancers to exhibit their talent and attend instructional workshops. Creator and host of IBFM, the Miami Hispanic Ballet Company is a non-profit organization created to connect and promote dancers of Hispanic descent in Miami-Dade County.

IBFM includes five different programs that are performed at six different venues in Miami-Dade. IBFM offers Workshops to intermediate and advanced ballet students taught by nationally and internationally renowned dance instructors and Dance Master Classes to invited students. The Dance Film Series will run from August 30 through September 5. Throughout September, the Art Exhibit Series will display "a thematic exhibition" of dance-inspired art by Cuban artist Tatiana Riquelme.

On August 30, the Miami Hispanic Cultural Arts Center kicks off IBFM with a screening of past IBFM ballet performances on a large screen in the Center's courtyard. The event begins at 8 p.m. and is open to the general public.

  • Annual First Responders Appreciation Night at Marlins Park, September 3, 2014, 7:10 p.m.

Enjoy one of America's favorite past times and honor first responders as the Miami Marlins take on the New York Mets at 7:10 p.m. on Wednesday, September 3. The Marlins' Annual First Responders Appreciate Night honors EMTs, police, fire department personnel and all other first responders. Tickets purchased through the special event package are only $25 and include a discounted baseline reserved seat and a First Responders Appreciation Night duffel bag. This special day is also Kids Eat Free Night for children ages 12 and under. With a voucher from any Marlins Park entrance, children will receive a complimentary Kayem Beef Frank, bag of chips and small Pepsi from any Fan Feast location in centerfield on the Promenade Level.

Only those tickets purchased online through the special event package will include a baseline reserved seat and duffel bag. Duffel bags can be obtained once the park opens at the redemption center in the West Plaza or on the concourse near section 28.   • Bold Botanicals: Family Artmaking, September 20, 2014, 1 - 4 p.m.

Enjoy an afternoon of arts and crafts at the Pérez Art Museum Miami event Bold Botanicals: Family Artmaking. Parents and children will be guided by PAMM Teaching Artists as they use bold patterns and bright colors to create art inspired by the work of Beatriz Milhazes, a Brazilian artist whose work is on exhibit at PAMM from September 19, 2014 through January 11, 2015. Free guided exhibition tours will take place at 11 a.m., 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. Participation in Bold Botanicals is free with the cost of museum admission.

  • Escape to Miami Triathlon, September 28, 2014

The Escape to Miami Triathlon is one of the largest athletic challenges in South Florida. Each year, 1,750 participants attend the race and face the challenge of escaping. Participants swim from Margaret Pace Park to "Escape Island," where they will find tiki torches awaiting their arrival. Once there, they bike across the island and run the last segment of the triathlon. Those who cross the finish line will ESCAPE back to Miami, and those who don't.....?

Escape to Miami is involved with several charities and volunteer organizations. Each runner is encouraged to raise funds for the charity of his or her choice. Many choose to run for the National Parkinson Foundation Team Hope. Team Hope events occur across the country, including sky diving, marathons, dances and any other athletic activities.

The Escape to Miami Triathlon is produced by Life Time Athletic Events. Two other triathlons are also offered: the Muscle Milk Olympic Distance Triathlon and the Mack Cycle & Fitness Sprint Distance Triathlon, each with varying escape routes and distances.

Participants register by division and may choose to form a relay team of two or three individuals. All finishers will receive a fierce finisher medal. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers and to the top three finishers of each age group and gender-specific weight division.

  • Miami Spice, August 1, 2014 through September 30, 2014

Miami Spice is a foodie's favorite time of year. The festival is a two-month long exhibition of Miami's best chefs and restaurants. Participating restaurants offer a three-course dinner of their signature dishes at a reduced price - $23 for lunch and $39 for dinner. Click here for a list of participating restaurants.

There are also a number of Miami Spice events for foodies to enjoy. On September 24, live music and food trucks will unite at the North Beach Bandshell for the Miami Beach Food Truck and Music Fest from 5 to 10 p.m. Cuisine will include healthy snacks, traditional American staples and ethnic cuisine. Participating restaurants include Arepa Box, Gastropod, Boba Station and many others.

Each Friday and Saturday, Schnebly Redland's Winery hosts "Friday Night Groove Karaoke" and "Saturday Nights at the Winery," where guests can enjoy a tropical wine tasting and live entertainment a tropical environment, complete with fish ponds and a waterfall, from 6 to 11 p.m. Browse all Miami Spice events here.
