One of the first Teddy Bears in the Smithsonian American History Museum
Who doesn't love a teddy bear? Most people have at least one bear in their lifetime. September 9 is the day to celebrate Teddy Bears.
The origin of the Teddy Bear is steeped in American history. In 1902, President Teddy Roosevelt was on a hunting trip in Mississippi. He didn't have any luck on the hunt. Someone brought out a small bear for the President to kill, but Roosevelt felt that was unsportsmanlike. A political cartoon talked of
Roosevelt sparing the bear. Morris and Rose Michtom saw the cartoon and made a bear, called Teddy's bear, to put in their candy store window in Brooklyn, NY. The bear was quite popular with customers so the Michtoms met with a manufacturer and created the Ideal Toy and Novelty Company. The rest is Teddy Bear history.
On September 9, take some time to celebrate with your family's Teddy Bears. Have a tea party or a teddy bear picnic. Make Teddy Bear crafts. Make teddy bear cookies: recipe or see video below. Sing Teddy Bear songs or read poems. Have fun with your child and their beloved bear.
