St. Joseph Today has gathered a weekend of favorite fall activities on September 26 and 27, 2014. Because there are so many ideas to choose from, it is recommended that visitors spend the night at this Lake Michigan resort community in order to take it all in. Event activities include:
Fall Festival: Sept. 26-27
Friday, September 26th
The Second Annual Rotary and Slumberland Great Bed Race will get the fun rolling at 4:30 p.m. on Lake Blvd. Teams will raise funds for the Benton Harbor Sunrise Rotary youth programs and for Slumberland Furniture 40 Winks Foundation which provides mattresses and beds to children who need them.
From 5 to 8 p.m., downtown merchants and restaurants will participate in “It’s Finally Friday” festivities. Sales, harvest menus and entertainment will fill the evening.
Saturday, September 27th
Day on the Farm, sponsored by United Federal Credit Union, will feature just-harvested fruits and vegetables, locally raised meats and fall decorations at the downtown Farmers Market. A free petting zoo will give visitors a chance to interact with goats, rabbits and ducks. Face painting and live music will round out the activities.
The Great Pumpkin Festival, sponsored as well by Benton Harbor Sunshine Rotary starts at 10 a.m. This all-day event includes pumpkin carving and decorating contests, pumpkin games and prizes, plant and bake sales and culminates with the Great Pumpkin Race at 2 p.m. Participants will cheer on a flotilla of numbered pumpkins. The first five pumpkins to cross the finish line will win $1,000, $300, $200, $100 and $50. A $10 entry fee will benefit Benton Harbor youth programs.
St. Joseph Wine Festival & Public Art Auction: Whirlpool Centennial Park will host wine tasting, local cuisine, live music and a fun-filled auction of the city’s public art lighthouse sculptures from 4 to 9 p.m. This is a great opportunity for adults to sample vintages from Baroda Founders, Burgdorf Wintery, Fenn Valley, Lemon Creek Winery, Round Barn Winery, St. Julian, Tabor Hill, Warner Vineyards, White Pine Winery, Virtue Cider and more. Medicinal Groove will perform live music from 4-5 and 6:30-9 p.m. within yards of Lake Michigan and its picturesque sunsets.
