In this season, Elena leaves Mystic Falls after a passionate summer with Damon. She moves into a dorm with her roomie Caroline and the girls are ready for a normal Whitmore College experience -- having new adventures and making new friends. However the good times end abruptly when the girls’ new roommate gets brutally murdered, a fellow Whitmore student named Jesse reveals intriguing information about the arrogant yet brilliant Professor Wes Maxfield, and Elena learns of the college’s dark history. Soon familiar faces are back in the girls’ lives as dark thoughts gnaw at Elena. Stefan, who was trapped underwater by his shadow self Silas, finally surfaces after three months and gets held hostage by Silas’ spurned lover Qetsiyah (known in current times as Tessa), who has come back to seek revenge against him for running off with her handmaiden Amara. Katherine, now human and vulnerable to her enemies after taking the vampirism cure, has a jaw-dropping transformation and struggles with mortality and motherhood, all the while ready to carry out her diabolical agenda. Bonnie is dead after sacrificing her life to resurrect Jeremy and later becomes the Anchor to the Other Side, allowing her to exist on both sides of the living and the dead.

When an old vampire friend from Damon’s past returns, Damon and Elena’s relationship is put to the test, while Stefan and Caroline’s friendship deepens as they stand up to the Travelers, a nomadic witch tribe led by the ruthless Markos who are seeking to lift a curse that had been placed on them. Upon the discovery that Silas, Qetsiyah, Amara, Elena, Stefan, the Travelers and the doppelgangers are all linked, destiny is tested by powerful forces and the Salvatore brothers are pitted against each other as the student body count rises. When the Travelers set in motion devastating plans for Mystic Falls and its residents, our favorite vampires are taught painful lessons as Anchors, Rippers, Passengers and Travelers struggle to survive alongside witches and werewolves. In the end, Damon finds himself making a huge sacrifice to save his loved ones, with catastrophic results.

Special features include deleted scenes, a gag reel, 2013 Comic-Con panel, and featurettes: “The Vampire Diaries: To The Other Side and Back,” “I Know What You Did…In the Last 100 Episodes” and “A Day in the After Life with Kat Graham.”
