When newcomer seniors on the go drop by the Alvin Senior Center located at 309 W. Sealy in Alvin Texas, they are always impressed with the variety of activities, trips, and seminars that are available to them.  Surprisingly, no membership fee is charged for membership.

The Center is alive with sounds of laughter, conversation, music, games, and events.  Part of Alvin Parks and Recreation, the Senior Center is open year round.  the 10,000 square foot facility houses two large meeting rooms, a music room, a computer room with five internet-ready computers, a TV lounge, and craft room.

Any person living in the Alvin area, that is over 50 years old or married to a qualifying member, is eligible to participate in all of the activities and programs offered to seniors by the City of Alvin and transportation is provided by the City through ActionS.  ActionS can be contacted at (281) 585-4677.  Very few senior centers can compare with the broad range of programs offered at the Alvin Senior Center.  The monthly and quarterly newsletters keep the membership informed of current and future activities, trips, and ongoing programs such as:

  • The adult morning swim
  • Body Recall Program, an exercise class that helps with mobility and flexibility
  • Grief and Loss Seminar
  • Quilting class
  • T.O.P.S. - "Take Off Pounds Sensibly"
  • Crocheting class
  • Mah Jongg class
  • Barbershop Chorus
  • Oil Painting and Watercolor classes
  • Bingo, Bunco, and Bridge
  • Alvin Country Squares - square dancing is back
  • Cake Decorating class
  • Aces exercise class
  • Board games
  • Domino Tournament
  • Wii Bowling Tournament
  • Lone Star Legal Aid - free one-on-one legal counseling is offered by Lone Star Legal Aid

Informative health seminars are frequently offered and there is always a fun trip on the schedule of events.  A "Learning Lunch" is held the second Thursday of each month offering information on a variety of topics while enjoying a FREE lunch.  Hands down, the Alvin Senior Center is rated "Best" in the Houston and surrounding area by this Examiner.  Well done, City of Alvin Texas and the staffs of the Alvin Senior Center and Alvin Parks and Recreation.
