Nancy Van Gulick the owner and CEO of Seniors Living Well, LLC, for the past five years, has decided to retire to spend more time with her new husband and doing community work. Patsieann Misiti will take over as the new owner.
Nancy is a Certified Senior Move Manager and oversees all operations of the organization, which is located in the Northern Virginia area. Her years of helping seniors move, including her family and friends, have given her the insight and the compassion to continue serving seniors in their relocation and transition needs. She has a business degree from The George Washington University, and has made Northern Virginia her home for over 30 years. A member of the Rotary International she lives the motto of ‘Service Above Self.’
“I look forward to a new phase in my life of retirement, spending half the time on the Eastern Shore,” said Nancy. “I will miss working with my aging clients and the wonderful communities that I have gotten to know over the years. However, I am delighted to have found a kindred spirit in Patsieann.”
After working with Nancy for the past few months, Patsieann will continue to serve senior citizens and their families in transition. The change in management, which happened in June, has been seamless. Their civic and community relationships naturally overlap.
“Patsieann brings the same devotion and attachment to clients that has become the hallmark of Seniors Living Well,” according to Nancy. “I am confident with Patsieann and her ability to lead Seniors Living Well.”
Nancy will be staying on as a consultant until the end of the year, and said that Seniors Living Well will continue to offer clients the same abilities, compassion, efficacy and friendliness that they have always enjoyed.
Patsieann comes to Seniors Living Well after 11 years of service with the City of Alexandria where she developed and implemented the Community Education Program for City of Alexandria Fire Department.
“While I enjoyed being able to teach fire prevention and life safety education to all age groups, I developed a soft spot for working with aging adults. One reason for this could be because I lived far away from parents, grandparents and other older relatives,” said Patsieann.
The goal of Seniors Living Well is to help clients create solutions for living as well and as independently as possible. This could mean downsizing from a current home to a smaller, more manageable condominium or an apartment in a continuing care retirement community. It could also involve de-cluttering and organizing a current home for those who wish to age in place.
Because both Nancy and Patsieann have been Alexandria residents for more than 25 years, they are both familiar with resources that their clients may need throughout Northern Virginia. Whether it is an elder care attorney or moving company that is needed, or a realtor, appraiser, housecleaning company or estate sale services, they are considered as the go-to source for transitioning services.
Seniors Living Well also works directly with the senior adult who is in the planning process and has identified the desire to move into a retirement community but is overwhelmed by the process. The children may or may not be available to help but it often is on a very limited basis.
“Sometimes the couples (or the widow/widower) decide it is time to move and their plan gives them six months to a year to accomplish the move” said Nancy. “The first step is to downsize their home they have lived in for 50 or so years. The job of sorting through it all is overwhelming to say the least, let alone making the emotional decisions necessary to part with it all.
One daughter said, “I would never have been able to downsize my mother. It was a huge house and my parents never threw anything away in 50 years. Before we hired you, I was completely overwhelmed.”
“Familiarity with movers, places to donate surplus items, etc. helped lessen the stress of my having to decide who to use and where to get rid of things I couldn’t use,” said a recent client. “I also knew you were very familiar with my new retirement community.”
Many of their clients already live in a retirement home or in an independent living facility. They find themselves having to move to assisted living or into the medical wing or a memory building.
Finally, Seniors Living Well works with realtors who have clients that have been moved to a rehab unit from the hospital and cannot come back to their home. The home must be cleaned out and the clients’ things moved to an assisted living community.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to provide expertise from three different life and career experiences – service to others, safety and design,” said Patsieann.
