Cinco de Mayo traditions flourish in Denver
Cinco de Mayo traditions flourish in Denver

Café Classico in the West Boulder Senior Center offers a "Wheels to Meals" program every Tuesday evening where five dollars buys dinner and a show, starting at 5:30. On May 4, 2010, elders are gathering at Café Classico to celebrate Cinco de Mayo with beef or chicken fajitas and a show featuring the Alternatives for Youth young dancers of Folklorico from Longmont.

Denver hosts its 23th annual celebration of Cinco de Mayo on Saturday, May 8 and Sunday, May 9, 2010 at Civic Center Park from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. both days. Cinco de Mayo commemorates the battle between Mexico and France on May 5, 1862 when Mexicans took victory over the French for the city of Puebla. Celebrated every year since in Mexico and across the U.S., Cinco de Mayo celebrates Mexican culture, art and music.

Also on May 4, a free all-day seminar, "Secrets to Sleeping Well," begins at 10 at Calvary Bible Church , at 3245 Kalmia Avenue in Boulder. Michael Weissberg, MD, will focus especially on how to address the changes that occur to sleeping habits as people age, offering practical tips and ways to alter sleep-robbing habits.

In April, the Denver Regional Council of Governments  (DRCOG) launched an online database listing service providers, medical and drug information, medical supply resources and numerous other links for seniors and their families. Chandra Matthews of DRCOG’s Area Agency on Aging told The Denver Post that “the website is really designed to connect seniors with services,” which are arranged by region and topic.

The Senior Hub, Inc. is a senior services agency providing support and referrals to older adults in the north Denver metro area.  Services include adult day care, meals on wheels, respite care and in-home services.
