In the Brazos Valley, Valentine’s week is the time for healthy hearts as well as romantic hearts. The City of College Station, Texas, is sponsoring Senior Heart Health Week Feb. 10-14 through its community program for senior citizens. With the theme of “Love Your Heart, Love Your Health,” a week full of events focuses on physical activity, mental acuity, and fun.
“The goal of the week is to promote cardiac health and well-being through physical activity, proper nutrition, and valuable educational opportunities. We hope activities will encourage social interaction and companionship among seniors in the community,” explains Kristina Beaugh, one of the program’s planners. Beaugh works at College Station’s Southwood Community Center and is a student in the master’s program of Texas A&M University’s School of Rural Public Health.
Events during Senior Heart Health Week include exercise sessions, line dancing, guest speakers, a cooking demonstration, free health checks, a dance, and a Valentine's Day tea. The week incorporates regular weekly events of the Senior Community Program in addition to special activities. Most events take place at Southwood Community Center, but check the program’s calendar found on the Parks & Recreation Department page of the City of College Station website. Here is a list of activities scheduled so far, with more being added up until the event.
Sit and Fit Class – These exercise classes, which usually follow a program from Chair Dancing International, provide a surprisingly tough workout. Participants remain seated during the session, so classes are excellent for senior citizens with limited mobility. Sit and Fit Classes will be held at noon on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday of Senior Heart Health Week (Feb. 10, Feb. 11, and Feb. 13). Thursday’s class will feature an instructor from the Aerofit Health & Fitness Center Senior Sneakers program.
Senior Health Fair – The health fair will be held from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 11. It features booths and educational information especially designed for senior citizens.
Line Dancing Classes – The regular 1:30 p.m. Tuesday line dancing class will be featured during Senior Heart Health Week. The popular line dancing classes provide rhythmic exercise to keep participants physically and mentally active.
Guest Speaker Dr. Rocky Bilhartz – On Wednesday, Feb. 12, Dr. Rocky Bilhartz will speak on “Signs of a Heart Attack, Stress Control, and Senior Circle.” Dr. Bilhartz is a doctor of internal medicine at BCS Heart in College Station. The presentation will begin at 11:00 a.m. and includes a light lunch, so reservations are required. RSVP by calling 979-764-6351.
Healing with Chocolate – What’s more likable than chocolate? At Healing with Chocolate, sponsored by Guardian Healthcare of Bryan, Texas, participants will learn potential health benefits of the delicious treat. The event will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.
Senior Valentine’s Day Dance – The Valentine’s Day Dance features music by DJ Tom Byer. The dance will take place at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 13.
Valentine’s Day Tea & Bingo – Friday, Feb. 14, closes out Senior Heart Health Week with the popular Valentine’s Day Tea & Bingo. A light lunch will be offered, so reservations are required. RSVP by calling 979-764-6351.
