Sunday, Senator Robert Byrd, democrat from West Virginia was hospitalized in serious condition; Byrd, 92, has been a member of Congress for a record breaking 57 years.

Byrd was hospitalized last week for heat exhaustion and dehydration, and was expected to spend a few days in the hospital. But Sunday, Byrd’s office reported that other conditions have developed and his condition is now serious.

"However, upon further examination by his doctors, other conditions have developed which has resulted in his condition being described as 'serious,' " the statement read.

Joe Manchin, West Virginia Governor said Sunday that they "are thinking about and praying for Sen. Byrd and his family."

"We are truly hopeful that he gets well soon because West Virginians need his leadership in Washington," the statement said. "Sen. Byrd is a true champion for our state."

With 57 years of service, Byrd is the longest-serving member of Congress, according to CNN.
