Update: Senator Harry Reid’s office sent me the following note regarding the unemployment extension vote:
Senator Reid said today on the floor that on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 2:15pm, the Senate will swear in the Senator-designee from West Virginia and that first vote next week will be on Tuesday, July 20, 2010 at 2:30pm, with respect to the Unemployment Compensation legislation.
That is great news for the more than two million of unemployed who have been waiting since June 2 for legislation to be passed. This legislation does not include the nearly two million 99ers who have been left out of this bill. Now is the time to get the 99ers some relief before the House goes on recess July 30.

The Senate appointment to replace the late Senator Byrd is expected tomorrow.
Manchin to name interim Senator at 2 p.m. Friday
West Virginia Gov. Joe Manchin (D) will announce an interim replacement for the late Sen. Robert Byrd at a 2 p.m. news conference Friday.
The governor's office said Thursday the interim replacement will be present and speak to reporters, but the governor has not yet publicly announced his pick.

Watching the Senate's session 1 on C-Span2 this morning, I recall Harry Ried saying he may have the Senate stay an extra week prior to the break to finish all his intended business.
and
I have also seen the media talk for the 99rs.
I have also seen some senators on the floor talk of the 99rs.
7/13/2010
Senator Sherrod Brown of Ohio
4:22 INTO In speech mentioned the unemployed who have exhausted their benefits.
7/14/2010 Senate Session 1
Senator Tom Harkin of Iowa
1:23 into speech mentioned the unemployed for more then 99 weeks
And on the Ed Show, Representative James Clyburn (D-SC) said that Congress should stay in session past their summer break in August and pass benefits for the 99ers.
You didnt see anything like this months ago.
But I just don't see any legislation yet to add the 99rs to any bill prior to the break.
I hope we get a response from Obomas letter. It should tell us something.
Thanks Michael. Good info. Peter. Thank you.
Thanks! Great info!
First I want to compliment you on your detailed coverage of the subject.
Second, Does anyone know about how long it will take to get checks once the bill IS passed?
I exhausted my benefits on June 2nd (in Wisconsin it had to be by May 30th to qualify for a federal extension). I'm tapped out and my phone gets shut off on Wed. of next week. That's after the extension that they already gave me. I need money and need it FAST! Hard to get call backs from a potential employer with no phone (and no address if I don't have funds for rent no later than the 1st).
So please, any ideas how long processing takes?
It is important that they bring some relief to the 99ers as well like you pointed out.
Michael Thornton, you are fanastic!
Thank you for such superb coverage of the UE issue, and for being a catalyst of sorts by way of your diligent coverage throughout!
Thanks Mr. Thornton. People need to ask themselves why fifteen million hard working Americans with anywhere from one to forty years of work under their belt would choose to forfeit everything they gained and try to live on one half to one fifth of their former income. Overninght we all just became lazy bums? I'm 58 with 40 years in residential construction and can't find a job. The last two places I worked went bankrupt. How's that my fault. Am I the cause of the economy or am I a casualty?
Will there be another 99ers bill if the 99ers aren't in Tuesday's bill? They may just want to squeak something through for the other tiers and then go on. Obama got the 99ers letter and hopefully he says something to the Senate about including benefits for us too. If not then Obama may have to do it himself, but an Executive Order may not work if verbiage doesn't include the 99ers. I would rather have a job, but may become homeless if no UI benefits. The United Way locally referred non-profit only helps people who can't get food stamps or government help = non-citizens, so I was denied food and told to find a church charity. See ladyofhope-net. A petition is on change dot org titled "Declare a state of national emergency to deal with the economic crisis" as a way to put some pressure on Congress to help the 99ers or have the President proclaim a state of national emergency, which would mean he could bypass Congress to get things done, i.e. activate FEMA, & Dept. of Homeland Security.
@FlatBroke: Wondering the same thing? I counted and I put out 30 resumes this week and that's hardly unsual for me. I ran out when my tier 3 finished and I can't pay next month's rent. So if this bill is signed next Tuesday when does unemployment restart?
I keep saying this because it is important to remember--they'd better NOT pass that legislation if the 99ers aren't included!! I mean, I don't want to see it passed otherwise. I'd rather see Congress torn to shreds by an angry mob of unemployed Americans, then to be left to fend for ourselves again. Enough has long been enough!! We have to make them do it! They'll basically be getting away with murder if they don't!
I thought that when down the goverment would be there to help but right now i have lost faith in the goverment i have family of 5 and rite now i feel less of a man cause right now i cant provide for them at all i fill out over a 100 applications and still nothing wit out this extension for da 99ers i really dont know wat i am goin to do .

Regarding how quickly payment/checks will be made - call your state's, or your local, UI office and ask. Every state has a different process set up. Some of them had you filing your claim as normal so that when the bill passed, they could get the money out very quickly - within a few days for some states - and others have something else in place. Only your local UI office can answer that question properly.
I beg everyone who reads this - DO YOUR HOMEWORK before making whiny comments on a blog because you can't be bothered to do it yourself Knowledge is power and you should never expect someone else to do for you what you should be doing for yourself. You're using the internet to post here - use it to look up your state's UI web site and see what they have said on this process.
Congress needs to do what is right and that is include either a "trigger" for automatic EUI until the jobless rate falls dramatically or else include the exhaustees in the bill. Include ALL people or NONE is the way I feel, for everybody is going to be a "99er" by the end of the year anyway. Then the whole matter will be revisited--again.
So if this passes what do we call the 99ers..the 125ers now?
Thanks Chicagogal, didn't think of actually contacting them (I think I might have blocked the idea subconciously cuz it takes about 2 days of constant calling to get through to them and there's not much info on web site).
As far as homework.. I've done it for sure. Hours of it. I'll post my bio info from facebook (info to try to bring awareness) in another post in a minute.
I'm sorry I'm not alone here. This is awful for those of us who are middle-aged, worked all of our lives and what few jobs are out there are not opening for us. Who's going to want to hire a middle-aged secretary who's worked since she was 16 and has been unemployed for over two years now.
I'm in school, but I'm worried that when I graduate there won't be anything offered to me.
I'm one of those 99'ers and if I don't either get a job or an unemployment extension my daughter and I will be homeless. Like someone else said if my phone is turned off there's no way for employers to contact me.
I'm scared and have never not been able to find work when I looked hard. I haven't been on an interview since last fall and I'm applying everyday.
Does anyone care that there will be a whole lot more homeless people soon?
I'm really scared.
I know that we would go insane if we worried about EVERYTHING around us. But if we don't stand up and pay attention now then what chance do we have in the future and even worse our children's futures? Sh** last I heard it's "We The People" not "We The Congress". If they're fu**ing up it's our job as citizens, parents, friends and neighbors to stand up and do something.

This and other video's with blatant disregard and lack of caring provoke a level of anger in me that I've not felt in a very long time. The saddest and scariest thing is that it's not only on the unemployment issue. The oil spill, Afghanistan and the overall economy are just a few other issues involving this type of ignorance.
These people are literally playing games with people's lives and the country's future.

I've heard MULTIPLE expert analysts say that the Republicans seem to now be voting down nearly ANY bill that could substantially help the economy in order to prepare for the 2012 elections. They want to be able to say "See this is how little the Obama Administration did for the economy so you should vote in a republican." And that's not to say that the Democrats are much better but at this point it is the republican's holding up a bill that can IMMEDIATELY infuse cash into the economy and literally save people from losing everything they have worked so hard for.
Their excuse is that it will add to the National Deficit, approx. $33.3-$35 billion over the next 10 years and that it needs to be offset or paid for somehow. Yet they (Republicans) all in agree that they should extends the Bush enacted tax cuts of 2001 and 2003 at a cost of 2.2 Trillion to the deficit over 10 years. These cuts affect every tax bracket. The thing is, the Obama Administration is FOR extending these

tax cuts for the Middle Class but NOT the wealthy (those making over $200,000 a year). Removing the tax cuts to the wealthy would save an estimated $678 Billion of the 2.2 Trillion over 10 years however the Republicans are against it.
I'm not happy with ANY facet of our government, but based off of all the research that I've done (4 hours worth just tonight), the Republicans are showing extremely bad decision making skills and are downright NOT concerned with the TRUE well being of the American people at least at this time. What it does seem that they have a high interest in is trying to find ways to position themselves to regain control over both houses of congress by blocking progress in hopes that the American public will blame the current majority (Democrats). That is what seems to be priority number one.
* For the record: I am doing open searches for this information, not just looking for statements that blame Republicans. Try typing this in Google and you'll

2010 Senate unemployment benefits extension vote July
A few more facts:
National Unemployment Rate: 9.5%
There are 5 job seekers for each available job in the US
Without any extension of unemployment benefits there is projected to be over 3 million people unemployed through no fault of their own not receiving any benefits by the end of July and a projected 8 million+ by the end of the year.
There are currently more than 15 million people unemployed through layoffs, downsizing and company bankruptcies in the country and another 15 million+ that are under employed (working part time or temp jobs but not making enough to get by).
These are the reasons that I have talked nothing but politics in my statuses and most of my comments on Facebook. I want people to see the truths and try to spread it to others so that our country and our children stand a chance at a decent, if not bright future. I hope you care.
----Homework Done----
9 9 ers need help as well in this chit hole economy. This needs to happen right now.
I have been researching some things that are very interesting. This is what I found on a VERY possible worsening situation.

I say we sell California to China to pay off the deficit and fund Unemployment and all entitlement programs 'til the balance is gone. Three, maybe four, problems solved at once!
I WOULD AGREE TO SELL CALIFORNIA, BUT NEW PROBLEM A BILLION CHINESE ILLEGALS CROSSING THE BORDER WOULD CLASH WITH 100 MILLION MEXICANS ILLEGALS AND WE WOULD HAVE TO FLIP THE BILL!! AS FAR AS I SEE IT THE WHOLE USA IS UP FOR SALE, COMMUNISM HAS PROVED ITSELF, WE HAVENT! WHY? CAUSE WE SHIPPED ALL OUR JOBS THERE AND THEN BOUGHT ALL THEIR CRAP! WORKED OUT WELL FOR THE GREEDY RICH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
news has been saying there is a possability of an additional 1 million home foreclosures, with most over 90 days delinquint in their mortgages! that will probably shake things up, cause im sure the rich dont want to lose equity in their homes, even though they can afford it!
its agood thing were in post recession and recovered so fast! it took 8 years for bush to do what he did! how much did he make and how much is he worth? talk about insider trading, he set the price on oil, greedy republicans!! how long will it take to undo everything he did?
Note to Simon:
If China owned California then that would be one less liability! The Govmt. wouldn't change that much, illegals could learn to speak Chinese, and the balance of trade would improve. China seems to be better at managing their economy and we could tax it as a U.S. territory! In any event, it will probably slide into the sea sometime in the future anyway which will be their problem not ours!
@ duh TOUCHE!
I MISS BUSH!
Unemployment benefits for 2 years. WOW! Now there's an incentive to get out and find a job. I'm fed up with this entitlement BS. If you cannot find a job...any job...in 26 weeks then something is wrong with you. I believe the 26 weeks is too long. If the area you live in is so depressed that there are no jobs, then move. If you prefer sitting on your a** waiting for a handout, then that is fine with me...as long as the handout does not come out of my pocket...or worse yet, I have to borrow money so you can get the handout. Find a job, any job, not just the one that suits you best, multiple jobs if that is what it takes and provide for yourself and your family. I've been there and done that...and you are no better than I.
@ dues + rep f-off!
"My" great State...Things are really getting better? Yeah right.

South Florida led the state in job losses last month, and unemployment rose throughout the region as a brutal labor market worsened.
Unemployment hit 12.8 percent in Miami-Dade, up from 12.3 percent in May. In Broward, unemployment grew to 10.1 percent from 9.7 percent. In all, the region lost 27,000 positions in 30 days.
Statewide, the picture was more encouraging. Florida's unemployment rate dipped slightly to 11.4 percent, the third month of improvement.
``This continuing decline in Florida's unemployment rate is another strong indication that our economy is improving,'' Cynthia R. Lorenzo, Florida's labor director, said in a statement after releasing the state figures.
The Florida Keys boasted some encouraging statistics, tying Walton County for the second-lowest unemployment rate in the state at 7.4 percent. But that was still worse than May's 7.1 percent
I am in Miami-Dade.
Sorry. Part 2
The numbers aren't what economists call ``seasonally-adjusted,'' meaning the losses don't take into account job losses that occur naturally as school ends and South Florida's tourism industry moves into the summer doldrums.
But the numbers also show that a sunnier picture for the jobless remains elusive. A year ago, in the midst of 2009's job-loss crisis, unemployment was at 9.5 percent in Broward and 11.7 percent in Miami-Dade.
South Florida's loss of 27,200 jobs amounted to a 1.2 percent decline, the worst in Florida. Even so, the region finished sixth in the list of Florida's worst job markets, with the Palm Coast leading the way at 15.4 percent.
the reason why your states numbers are dropping is because of all the people who can no longer collect!!!!!!!!
Yeah.Miami-Dade and Broward are the main areas of So. Fl. and the rates are going up, and thats not factoring in people who gave up looking and etc.(we know the rest).
"South Florida's loss of 27,200 jobs amounted to a 1.2 percent decline, the worst in Florida."
Duespaid, you're a sick person...lol
No other comment.
34 billion is a drop in the bucket to these guys on capital hill and they know it! they had trillions for bailouts! when the credit card company called me i asked them for a job so i could work off my debt (like a slave) they told me no!
"South Florida's loss of 27,200 jobs amounted to a 1.2 percent decline, the worst in Florida."
Well, if you think 34billion is something you should visit the sites I listed below. The good ole usa invested way more than that in offshore banks
Were not looking for handouts if were in our situation you would not be so evil and sour faced. Thats rude!! It sounds to me like you are an old set in the ways person Mr or DuesPaid. I'll tell you what I paid my dues too. Just because there are people on unemployment does not mean that were not looking for work. You sound uterly ignorant.
To duespaid- i'm so happy for you that feel so secure in your job that you can come in here knock people that can not find a job, or in process of lose everything, how dare you say the things you do, you know what saying says goes what goes around comes around, so don't be so spiteful. because it could come back to bite you in the ass.SO REMEMBER THAT YOUR JOB IS NOT SECURE!!IT CAN BE GONE IN INSTANT!!! TRUST ME
I would suggest a cold drink while reading stats on profits, bailouts, wall street, fanny may, Freddie mac, and government. The cold drink is to keep you from over heating... Horrendous!
