Update: 4:20pm Thursday April 21, 2011

Sen. John Ensign (R) announced Thursday night that he will resign from office in early May, a move that comes amid an ongoing ethics investigation into his conduct.

“While I stand behind my firm belief that I have not violated any law, rule, or standard of conduct of the Senate, and I have fought to prove this publicly, I will not continue to subject my family, my constituents, or the Senate to any further rounds of investigation, depositions, drawn out proceedings, or especially public hearings,” Ensign said in a statement posted on his website. “For my family and me, this continued personal cost is simply too great.”

Breaking: Senator John Ensign who last month announced that he will be retiring and not seek reelection in 2012, is now reported to be resigning as soon as tomorrow.

If true, Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval might pick Ensign’s replacement. And that pick would certainly be Republican Rep. Dean Heller (CD2), who had already announced his intentions of running for Ensign’s seat the day after Ensign announced his retirement.

If the above scenario plays out it will give the Republicans a better chance to hold onto the seat in the 2012 General Election with Heller already having one foot in the door.

Congresswoman Shelley Berkley (D-NV) has also announced that she will run for the Senate seat which is currently held by Ensign, and is giving up her Congressional seat in CD1.

Sharron Angle who last year gave Senator Reid a race for his money and his Senate seat, has already announced that she will run for Congressman Dean Heller’s CD2 seat in the 2012 primary election. At this point there have been no announcements on who will run for Congresswoman Shelley Berkley’s CD1 seat.
