Senator Dean Heller voted to kill Medicare today

Republican US Senator Dean Heller today voted to kill Medicare, along with 39 other Republican Senators. Heller who recently replaced Nevada Senator John Ensign also voted to kill Medicare while he was in the House a few weeks ago.

Medicare which is supported by a vast majority of US citizens was the major factor in yesterdays special election in New York’s 26th congressional district which was won by Democrat Kathy Hochul who defeated Republican Jane Corwin. Just so you know, New York’s 26th District is a staunch Republican district, and in the 2008 Presidential election John McCain won there by double digits.

Senator Heller was appointed by Nevada’s Governor Brian Sandoval, and he will have to run in the 2012 election to keep the seat that he was given.

Heller who was a congressman in Nevada’s 2nd congressional district, which is also a staunch republican district, will have to run a Statewide campaign for next years General election as opposed to just winning his district. And with a large percentage of Nevada voters who are retired or who are approaching retirement age, it is unlikely that they will vote for anyone that voted to kill Medicare. And Heller voted to kill Medicare twice.

Today’s vote in the US Senate was pushed by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, so all Senator’s would be on record as to where they stand on Medicare for our seniors and disabled Americans.

The vote was 57-40.

Voting with the Democrats were Sens. Scott Brown (R-MA), Olympia Snowe (R-ME), both 2012 incumbents , along with Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK). And Rand Paul (R-KY) voted against it because it wasn't radical enough.

Sens. Chuck Schumer (D-NY), Pat Roberts (R-KS), and Kay Bailey Hutchison (R-TX) did not vote.
