New Jersey Gubernatorial Candidate Senator Barbara Buono was the passenger involved in a motor vehicle accident on Monday night, Feb. 11, 2013, and was slightly injured according to a press release from her campaign.
Buono was sitting in the backseat and was not wearing her seatbelt, a violation of the state law and was given a ticket for the offense. Her driver, Nicholas Rodriquez 23, of Morris County was cited for careless driving police said. Rodriquez had minor injuries and declined treatment. Buono had minor injuries and was treated and released from Robert Wood Johnson Hospital in New Brunswick. Michael Embrich, 32, who was also in the car, did not suffer any injuries. The driver of the other vehicle involved was not injured.
Buono spokesmen David Turner stated that “around 8 pm last night, Senator Buono was being driven home from an event by a staff assistant. As her driver attempted to turn, he collided with an oncoming car".
“Neither driver suffered any injuries. Senator Buono, who was riding in the back seat and wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, suffered a small cut to her forehead. Senator Buono was taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. There she was treated and released shortly thereafter. She is back at work this morning."
“Senator Buono is extremely grateful that no one was seriously injured in the accident, and thanks everyone who has called, emailed, or messaged their thoughts and good wishes.”
Ironically, when the seatbelt legislation was voted on in the legislature, Buono, a Senator at the time, did not vote on the law.
