N.H. GOP Chairman John H. Sununu at the Portsmouth
Herald editorial board meeting.
John Sununu the Dad says if John Sununu the Son wants to run for U.S. Senate seat he won't have a primary to worry about.
That was clearly the state GOP chairman's message in an editorial board meeting yesterday with the Portsmouth Herald newspaper, which I was invited to be a part of.
John H. Sununu was asked during the course of the one-hour meeting about the U.S. Senate seat being vacated by Republican Judd Gregg, and whether he would involve himself in the decision of who runs -- his son, John E. Sununu, or Kelly Ayotte, the Republican attorney general who's been rumored as wanting to run.
Asked if he will get involved as GOP chairman to who will run or not run, Sununu said, "I will use my warmth and charm to make sure that if there is a primary it is a constructive primary, or if a primary can be avoided I will do that."
He indicated if indeed his son decides to run that Ayotte will step aside, saying, "I think if my son runs there will not be a primary."
See the Portsmouth Herald story here.
Democratic U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes has announced for Gregg's Senate seat already and appears to have a primary-free campaign.
The Republicans, still bruised from the 2008 Democratic throwdown, would like nothing better than the same.
Here's video of what Sununu said on the matter:
