The U.S. Senate moments ago voted to change the filibuster rules on Presidential nominations for Federal Judges. While the rules change will not affect Presidential nominations for the Supreme Court, it will apply to all nominations for all other Federal Judges. The rules change will end the requirement for a 60 vote threshold for cloture and will now only require a simple up or down vote for judges on the Federal bench.
The proposal to end or change the filibuster rule in the U.S. Senate had been dubbed the “Nuclear Option”. In today’s vote, a no vote was a vote to change the filibuster rule, the final vote was 48-52 with 3 Democrats voting with the Republicans.
For several years Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has threatened to change the filibuster rule which Republicans have used on the vast majority of President Obama’s nominations. But in the eleventh hour, Reid and Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) would come to an agreement to allow a few of President Obama’s nominations to be voted on, but Reid and the Senate Democrats continued to see Republicans block every nomintation by President Obama for every government agency.
To put this in its proper perspective on just how far the Republicans in the U.S. Senate have gone to block President Obama’s nominations; in the history of our nation there have been a total of 168 Presidential nominations blocked, 82 of those where President Obama’s nominations, the other 86 were blocked during the Presidencies of all other U.S. Presidents. Republicans say this will come back and hurt the Democrats if and when they take control of the White House and the U.S. Senate, but seen as the Republicans are damaging our nation’s judicial system now, this “Nuclear Option” has been a long time coming. And Republicans themselves used it during the Bush administration.
Watch the attached video as Senator Harry Reid tells you exactly what Republicans have been doing to endanger our nation by blocking not only judicial nominees, but by also blocking nominees for agencies that keep our nation safe and secure.
