U.S. Senators Thad Cochran and Roger Wicker (both Republicans from Mississippi) applauded committee passage of legislation they co-sponsored that will provide Mississippi and other Gulf Coast states with a significant share of federal fines paid by British Petroleum for the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
Wicker and Cochran voted to approve legislation that will direct at least 80 percent of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill penalties under the Clean Water Act (CWA) to the Gulf Coast states for the long-term recovery of the Gulf ecosystem and economy.
The Restore the Gulf Coast States Act of 2011 was introduced in the Senate by the Alabama Senator, Richard Shelby.
Said Senator Jeff Sessions from Alabama, 'this is an important day for the Gulf Coast. Ensuring the safe passage of the Restore Act through the Senate committee process has been among my highest priorities this year and I am very pleased that our committee voted today to send this legislation to the full Senate for its consideration' - 'Today’s vote would not have been possible without the hard work of fellow Senators. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the Senate and in the House of Representatives to see that the Restore Act becomes law.
This dedication to the passage of the Restore Act full is viewed as a key step in the recovery in the Gulf Coast that is critical to the well-being of the entire nation.'
