Sen. Jim DeMint claims gays, sexually active single women, unfit to teach

Republican South Carolina Senator Jim DeMint is making the sexist and homophobic argument that openly gay individuals and sexually active unmarried women should not be allowed to teach in America's public schools.

DeMint made his controversial comments while addressing a group of religious conservatives Friday in his home state of South Carolina. In a 45-minute speech at the Greater Freedom Rally DeMint covered a range of issues, including the economy, social issues like abortion, and his support for conservative Tea Party candidates.

DeMint claims if someone is openly homosexual they should not be teaching in the classroom. DeMint holds the same position on sexually active unmarried women. However, he is silent about sexually active single men.

No surprise, DeMint has also been an outspoken opponent of any form of gay marriage.

DeMint is a dangerous and radical ideologue pushing the Republican party toward a Christian extremism that is antithetical to a free society.

DeMint, along with the "Junior Mints,"  a group of Tea Party candidates who believe that we should eliminate the minimum wage, end Social Security, do away with civil rights protections, force women to bear the children of rape and incest, and openly discriminate against members of the GLBT community, pose a dire threat to a free and just America.
DeMint is setting himself up as a Tea Party hero, and the voice of Christian bigots.  Friday he told supporters that he will continue to recruit like-minded Conservatives across the nation to run for Congress and asked Christian pastors to join the fight to “take our country back.”

Make no mistake, this is not about taking our country back, this is about turning our country into a Christian theocracy.

DeMint and his fellow Tea Party crazies make the mistake of equating "freedom of religion" with the "right to state-sponsored religious discrimination."  Religious belief can no longer be an acceptable excuse for bigotry and hatred.

The homophobia of Christian fundamentalists like DeMiint and his Tea Party "Junior Mints" is toxic and evil.  All good people need to show up in force in November to prevent the evil of the Tea Party from destroying this country.

The entire world is moving forward and this idiot wants to go back to some 'glory' days where there was no alcohol (ummm, that didn't work out very well did it?), where women couldn't choose to terminate their own pregnancy, and where gay men still existed and cheated on their wives (but in privacy). If this nut has his way, women just may become property of their husbands. What sort of fantasyland does he live in?

If we don't continue to progress as a society, the US will become a 3rd world country!

Hmm... "silent about sexually active unmarried men."

No surprise there. Hypocrisy in its purest form.

I guess its hard for the older generation to embrace change. I go to church in Spartanburg SC and have a gay brother. We were all raised on Christian values and it is hard to read articles like this. Hopefully one day the world will move forward and realize that everyone deserves equality;)

Why is it that neither YOU nor the article you link to support your LIES that neither of you actually QUOTE the "offensive" comments?

That seems intellectually dishonest or plain FASCIST to make a claim with no evidence.

This article is one of the most bias articles i have ever read. the author of this article needs to take a more nuetral stance on this topic or I forsee his future being very short in the news reporting world.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Wow, incredibly biased article but not surprising. It's a shame this senator is taking a concept as great as the Tea Party and turning it into the Bigotry Party.

As long as we have openly gay teachers we're going to have instances like recent one in the Portland area where a teacher bragged to a 4th grader that he was gay. What was that about? Are the out of of closet boys so proud of themselves that they need to broadcast it to everyone, even children?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Thats the plan. Normalization is the goal even though it is un-natural.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

As I recall the story, one of the kids in the student teacher's classroom asked him why he wasn't married. He replied, truthfully, that it was illegal for him to marry in Oregon because he would choose to marry a man. He told the truth and 4th graders are certainly old enough to know both about gay people (have you ever heard how often the term f_g is hurled around a elementary school playground?!) and that gay people aren't some evil alien species. And you can bet your last dollar that there are some gay kids in that class who will remember for the rest of their lives the day their gay teacher stood up for them and told the truth--and maybe for the first time in their lives realized they can live a life without fear. What we need in this world is more truth, like that student teacher spoke, and less lies and hatred. And, yes, 4h graders are not too young to hear the truth.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

That is the most disgusting thing I have ever read. You teach 4 graders how to do long division, American history, a little art, but you don't try to teach them that it is just fine and normal to cozy up with some guy and pull on his pud, or whatever it is that they do. My God, I never seen such stuff. Thank you MR. Stone, you are a freak.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

    @That last comment:
    Jesus christ, over-exaggerate much? =/
He never taught him how to pull some guy's "pud". All he did was tell the truth on why he wasn't married. Stop being such a drama queen.

To the two idiots attacking the original poster of this comment, nice going. Instead of challenging the argument, you personally insult the original poster. Classic ignorant cop-out.

Damn right homersexuals shouldn't be teaching kids. Homersexuality is a freakish abnormal behavior and all homersexuals should seek help to rid themselves of this abnormal behavior just like any other mental disease. We don't need mentally sick teachers teaching impressionable youngsters now do we.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

I disagree with your comment. I know a lot of homosexual teachers. Just because you are gay doesn't mean you shouldn't be around children. I am guessing you a man (if not sorry)? If you like women, then you shouldn't be a teacher as well, because after all there are young girls that are impressionable in that classroom. We wouldn't want them to start liking girls now would we? See how ridiculous that sounds.

Spell check would suit you well.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

And manners would suit you well, but we can't always get what we want.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Jim DeMint is my representative and I am upset about his comments. Just because your gay or unmarried doesn't mean you cant do your job! Being from the south I understand that christian beliefs are important, but times have changed. We need to realize that not everyone has the same belief system...thats what makes America great! If we decide to fire people based on what they do on their own time then our unemployment rate would be much worse!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

WHAT comments? This article and the link provided DO NOT QUOTE his comments!

How is that for fair and balanced?

IF you trust this far left fringe freak Stone that would be fine.

WHY did he nor the link QUOTE the exact words in context? Is he Breitbarting the comments by the fine Senator.

How come there seem to be so many batshit-crazy teabaggers leaving comments on liberal news websites? Is this some organized effort on behalf of Fox News and the evangelical churches? Scary.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

First off this isn't a LIEberal news site. It is a Pigressive site which is more commietard than a libtard site. Libtards are commie lite and Pigressives are actual commies/ Marxists by a different alias.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Sounds like another libtard obsessed with getting teabagged.

I wonder how he feels about the unmarried sexually active men involved in the Catholic church child molestation scandal.
As long as they're not openly gay or female, right?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

It goes against the Fifth Amendment, so I don't see how that could happen.

Notice how many fringe lefties are reporting this story and forgetting these stories?

I know you fringers will not like the source but you can't deny the facts.

DeMint just might have something there.

Too damn bad these fringers have such an ax to grind and can't see the big picture.

I guess these fringers don;t mind their children being used for the teachers pleasure.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Well-educated liberals/progessives power this country--it's scientific, economic, and artistic output. What do you think this country would look like if the teabaggers were in charge? Do you think our universities, corporations, and R&D would be able to compete globally?

Yet, I would like to stress the point that I don't hate those on the far-right and I understand their frustration. As a liberal/progessive, I also feel marginalized from our current state of politics and I feel like my professional opportunities are shrinking. However, I don't think the solution is to be vicious to my fellow citizens on the right. Let's try to understand each other better, look for compromise, and work hard to make sure our country can make it through this difficult time.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Give us some examples libtarded pigressive instead of just spouting off some worthless caca your 1960's/1970's hippie freak teacher told you. Most libtards and pigressives don't even have JOBS much less "power this country." What are you 12?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

"However, I don't think the solution is to be vicious to my fellow citizens on the right."

    Yet you call them teabaggers?

To many that is no different than calling someone a nigger!

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Exactly, this is why there needs to be more discussion between people of different political persuasions. I was ignorant of the fact that some people associated with the Tea Party are offended by the term "teabagger." Now, I will be more sensitive about using this word to describe them.

Let's all learn from each other and try to respect each other's differences.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Do you actually know what a tea bagger is?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Most on the right are happy to engage. But do a survey of this Examiner and the terms he uses to disparage anyone who simply thinks differently.
The Tea Party has been called everything in the book. Even the Taliban. That is preposterous! AND insulting.

The majority of name calling comes form the left. That is a fact.

When you are trying to engage and the response from a leftist is "your so stupid..." "your a racist..." etc, where do you think the conversation can go from there?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Nobody said it is easy to engage a discussion with people that are on the opposite side of the political spectrum. The times when "leftists" call you disparaging names is exactly when you should remain civil and calm. Set an example of how to behave well in those situations and demonstrate to your political adversary that you are above hurling insults and emotional-based arguments.

Let's not forget that you, I, and the author of this article are all people that want the best for ourselves and our country. Our different life experiences have shaped our political paths, but we all have valid concerns that should be respected.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Here is an example of 'discourse' from my local newspaper blog.

    " arewedoneyet1 at 11:40 AM October 6, 2010

The conservative party today is full of "CRAZY< CRAZY PEOPLE' like, Engle, Palin, Rand & O'Donnell just to name a few. Ronald Regan would be rolling in his grave if he got a look & listen to these people. The Sun is right on the mark in it's comments about (the new conservatives) they are unfit and insane!!!!"

    " howie14w at 7:15 AM October 6, 2010

Many of today's conservatives are NOT classic conservatives in any sense of the word. They are angry haters who can't even explain what they are angry about if asked. They are angry radicals, many of whom want to change want to take away MY freedoms, rewrite and reinterpret the constitution to support THEIR bigotry, while projecting such efforts on liberals and Democrats.

An America fully under their control would be the Christian equivalent of those middle eastern countries they so despise.

    They are the American Taliban."

Do you think you can 'discuss' anything with these people?

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

YES, this is the exact time when you can better advance your political opinions. Don't let people bait you into an emotionally-charged argument. They may get even angrier, but that's your cue to be even more calm. Explain to them, without name calling or hostility, why you are concerned about the direction the country is heading. Tell them how and why your personal experiences and perceptions, as well as what you read in the media, have led you to the conclusion that a conservative stance is the correct path. However, I would challenge you, as well as liberals, to be open-minded and receptive of different arguments. Don't feel threatened by other opinions, but rather see how you can learn from them.

  • Anonymous 1 year ago

Tried that, been there, tied that again. Even tried to engage one or two posters and disregard the rest. Went well for a few threads. Then the teabagger and racist and want the world to end accusations and all the straw men and red herrings..... I learned you cannot engage liberal progressives. They hate anyone with any religious beliefs other than Islam which they vigorously defend. They defend it by slurring the Christians mostly then Jews next. You read it everywhere.

One thing is for certain: liberals are not fit to teach anything to anyone. Remember, liberalism is a mental disorder.

  • Anonymous 2 months ago

Liberals are not the ones with disordered thinking. A poster above is posting a list of 7 or so women teachers who've had sexual relations with a teenage male student, as if this justifies DeMint's assertion that sexually active single women should not be teachers. This person's stupidity is absolutely stunning. The reason the list exists is in fascination because women abusers are so rare---the number of male teachers who've abused girl students throughout history is countless. Where is the rationality in discriminating against single women who have sex with adult boyfriends, for fear these women will statutory rape boy students??? Why suspect that, because a woman is intimate with her adult boyfriend, she'll be after the boys???? And why doesn't the same apply to MEN TEACHERS who are single and having sex with an adult girlfriend???--Why no equal fear that he will be after his girl students??? It is an irrational, misogynistic, sexist double standard beyond bounds!

Bottom line: DeMint and many Republicans thinks women should be punished for being sexual, while men should be permitted to be as sexual as they please.

Lastly, for the record, in the most famous case of a woman teacher with a boy student lover, Mary Kay Letouneau was MARRIED, not single, therefore the most famous 'abuser' of all would've slipped right through the cracks of DeMint's rules and been able to teach regardless of her having an eye for young boys.
