"This is one more event to add to the litany of massacres that occur when a deranged person or grievance killer is able to obtain multiple weapons—including a military-style assault rifle—and kill many people in a short amount of time," she said in a statement.
"When will enough be enough? Congress must stop shirking its responsibility and resume a thoughtful debate on gun violence in this country. We must do more to stop this endless loss of life," she added.
Feinstein failed in her latest attempt to restrict the Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms, which was precipitated by last year's Sandy Hook school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
That effort was supported by the Communist Party USA, which called the Second Amendment "obsolete."
But as Chicago Mayor Rahm Emmanuel once said, a serious crisis should never go to waste, and ;iberals appear ready to once again take on the mantle of gun control -- despite FBI statistics showing that more people are killed by clubs, hammers and fists than with rifles or shotguns.
The National Journal said Feinstein was the first lawmaker to make the case for more gun laws, but pundits like CNN's David Frum and Dave Zirin, the sports editor of "The Nation," a liberal outlet, began the drumbeat for gun control while events in Washington were ongoing.
Actor Henry Winkler issued a tweet calling for more gun control, and predictably, some on Twitter instantly blamed the NRA.
One person on the social media site even called for violence against the NRA.
"I'm sorry but someone needs to walk into the NRA headquarters and shoot up the place," tweeted "Greg."
But it is doubtful more laws would work in a district that has some of the toughest gun control in the nation.
The Daily Caller's Jim Treacher mocked the call for more gun laws on Twitter.
"Why is it that mass shootings tend to happen in places with the strictest gun laws? In gun-free zones? And why aren't we supposed to ask?" he tweeted.
It is still unclear what motivated the gunman identified as Aaron Alexis, a 34-year-old Navy veteran and native of New York City, who was shot Monday. Authorities say they do not fully understand how he accessed the base and are reportedly searching for another possible suspect, described as a black man in his 40s with gray sideburns, wearing an olive-drab military-style uniform.
