Vitter, a republican, announced that he will be sending out emails today to all of his supporters announcing that he will be considering the governor's office race for 2015 and that the final decision will be made after the holiday season. Vitter will announce his decision in January.
Vitter had this to say to the press, "This is the logical time to do it, if I'm ever going to do it. There are strong arguments in either direction, but the general question in my mind is where I think I can make the most positive contribution."
Vitter, from Metairie, LA, is in his second term in the U.S. Senate.
Vitter will face opposition from fellow republicans Jay Dardenne, the current Lt. Governor and John N. Kennedy, the current state Treasurer.
Another possible candidate is the current Public Service Commissioner, Scott Angelle, who has not made any announcements to date about his possible run for governor.
The Louisiana primary is currently scheduled for October 24, 2015 and a runoff election for November 21, 2015 if necessary.
