On January 12, SemaConnect (www.semaconnect.com) and the Lenkin Company Management Inc. (www.lenkin.com) announced the installation of several ChargePro electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at 2201 Wisconsin Avenue, Washington D.C., a mixed use (office, retail, and residential) building. The Lenkin Company has also installed six other EV charging stations at some of their other properties in Washington, D.C.
"Electric vehicles are here and they are only growing more on our roads. Urban locations require EV charging stations, and we provide the best turnkey solutions for commercial charging," said Mahi Reddy, CEO of SemaConnect. "Soon there may be more EV charging stations in Washington, DC than gas stations. Across the U.S., our stations are being installed to help EV drivers extend their range and manage their driving with software."
Last fall, SemaConnect and 350Green, a developer of EV charging station networks, had announced their plans to install 1,500 EV charging stations throughout the U.S. in 2011-2012. The two companies have so far installed stations in California, Colorado, and Oregon, as well as Maryland. Last year, SemaConnect deployed over 400 stations throughout the U.S.
SemaConnect and the Lenkin Company Management want to make charging more convenient for all EV drivers within the Washington, D.C. area. Most people with electric cars charge them at home, but many city-dwellers don't have their own garages and thus must depend on public or commercial garages to charge their cars. Putting charging stations at places where people work, live, shop, and dine lets them charge their cars while they go about their business. A ChargePro EV charging station can fully charge a Chevy Volt in 7 or 8 hours and a Nissan Leaf in 3 or 4 hours. Thus, a worker can hook up their car to the station in the morning and then come back to a fully charged car in the afternoon.
"We are very pleased to have this opportunity to make these charging stations available to our community," said Edward Lenkin, the President of the Lenkin Company Management." "Hopefully, today's fledgling network of charging stations expands quickly and promotes the growth of EV ownership in our city. The improved air quality is good for all of us."
Since electric cars take a long time to charge, the charging stations need to be in places where people park for a long time-- like many businesses. As more automakers produce electric cars and as more people buy them, more businesses will see the necessity of installing stations on their premises. Early adopters that already have charging stations include the Lenkin Company, Corporate Office Properties Trust, PMI Parking, and The Bozzuto Group.
