Today May 14, 2014 Nik Davidson revealed Selvala, Explorer Returned, one of the newest spoilers from Wizards of the Coast's upcoming Magic: The Gathering sets Conspiracy and Vintage Masters, in an article on DailyMTG.com.
Selvala, Explorer Returned - 1GW
Legendary Creature - Elf Scout (Rare)
Parley - Tap: Each player reveals the top card of his or her library. For each nonland card revealed this way, add G to your mana pool and you gain 1 life. Then each player draws a card.
"The Lowlands refuse to suffer at the whims of the High City."
Selvala, Explorer Returned is an interesting choice for a commander. The larger the game, the more potentially broken and explosive Selvala, Explorer Returned can be, especially early on. If you've cast a second turn Selvala, Explorer Returned off a first turn mana creature such as Elvish Mystic or Avacyn's Pilgrim then you'll be able to potentially cast a spell for eight mana on turn three provided five players reveal a nonland card.
In fact, you could potentially win the game on turn three thanks to Umbral Mantle. Given enough players, you'll be able to generate a massive amount of green mana and force everyone to draw their entire decks. With an Island Sanctuary, Pursuit of Knowledge, or Abundance you'll be able to skip drawing a card or two while everyone else dies. Just hope that you've played your enchantment before an opponent gets their Force of Will.
Infinite combos aside, Selvala, Explorer Returned generates a nice little tempo boost. Sure, everyone gets a card however you'll also gain a life. You'll be able to take advantage of that with cards that trigger "whenever you gain life" like Archangel of Thune. Because you're "helping" everyone, they'll be likely to leave you and Selvala, Explorer Returned alone...until it's too late.
How will you use Selvala, Explorer Returned?
