Self-esteem and creativity

When our creative juices run dry, we also tend to run out of "steem", self-esteem. Educational institutions have often stressed the important link between creativity and self-esteem, encouraging parents to learn related parenting techniques and enroll their children in creative arts after school programs. Creativity is equally important for self-esteem in adults to lead to healthier, happier and more productive lives and relationships.

Getting creative doesn't have to be limited to traditional outlets like painting, dancing or sculpting.  There are many creative outlets that can help balance the mind, body and spirit, boost self-esteem and open up new adventures and ways of fulfilling potential.

1.  Create Space. Finding time and space to breathe and focus is crucial for allowing creative energy room to grow and flow. It doesn't matter how small of a space you choose, or whether it's indoors or outdoors, as long as you can find peace and quiet there. You can meditate, play piano, cook, or just walk in nature to help tap into the essence of who you are. Eastern cultures refer to this as balancing the chi, or energy in your body. If you need to, just find a spiritual place to veg out and get pampered.

2.  Revive Vibrancy.  When you were younger you probably never worried about adding a bright shot of color to your outfit, environment, or make-up; as an adult it can be a bit more daunting. Start with something simple like adding a bright scarff accent to your wardrobe, or a picture frame to your home that has a hue that calls to you. By introducing creative colors into your life, you create and attract new, positive vibrational energy and help balance and restore your chakra energy centers.

3.  Express Yourself.  It's cliched, but true.  By finding a way to express your emotions whether through journaling, an acting class, or even a book club or group, you unleash repressed frustrations, create better communication skills and enhance creativity and self-esteem.

The next time you're feeling a drop in confidence think outside the box and get creative!
