On Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 10 a.m., Degerberg Academy of Martial Arts will host a two hour seminar on Women's Self Defense that is open to the community. The seminar will be lead by black belts Rita Figueroa and Angela Gibson, co-founders of Empowered Health & Fitness. The price of admission includes a month of follow up classes for those who are not already members of Degerberg Academy (members get a discount).
"We teach will incorporate awareness of surroundings to get people to start thinking of their safety," says Gibson, a fifth degree black belt. "We will also incorporate the physical part of self defense, basic self defense drills so students can get hands on experience and we will show defense against knife attack or gun attack."
"It's a crazy world we live in," adds third degree black belt and retired pro-boxer Figueroa, "and if we can show someone one thing that may help save them; that's why we do these. Feeling empowered and being able to defend ones self is very important and helps a persons confidence as well."
"Rita and I like to empower other people by teaching what we have learned," adds Gibson. "It helped build our confidence and if we can do the same thing for someone else we are more than happy to do it."
Can't make this seminar, but interested in self defense? No problem. "We are open to doing seminars for schools, at the workplace, anywhere we can help women and men feel safe and prepared if need be" states Figueroa.
The cost of the seminar is $25, with a $5 discount for members of the Academy. The seminar will be held at Degeberg's Lincoln Square location at 4717 N. Lincoln Avenue in Chicago and take place from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information or to register in advance contact Degerberg Academy directly at (773) 728-5300.
