Self Defense Safety Tips

The holidays will be here faster then you can image and in shape or not, being safe should be a top priority.  Rape is a scary thing, and knowing self defense is a good way to help avoid a potential attack.

According to Grandmaster Hans Martial Arts “Most rapists said they did not carry a weapon because rape with a weapon carries a 15-20 year sentence instead of the normal 3-5 years. This means fight back, any kind of resistance could discourage the rapist because the more time they take the greater the chance of being caught.”

Ceth Jordan of Farmington Martial Arts teaches self defense in St. Louis MO says “Always be aware, breathe and communicate. Be aware of your surroundings and trusts your instincts; breathing using the lower portion of your lungs for more oxygen, and communicate with verbal commands that will establish you’re willing to fight.”

Here is what a rapist looks for in a potential victim

  • Prefer long hair – a ponytail or long hair will be used against you
  • Look for easily removed clothes – Rapist even carry scissors
  • Someone distracted – don’t be distracted by using cell phones, texting or carrying bags that would allow you to be caught off guard and easily overpowered

Most rapes occur early in the morning between 5:00 am and 8:30 am. The three most common places of abduction for women is grocery parking lots, garages and public restrooms.

Remember these tips:

  • Umbrella, purse, keys or other items can be used as weapons
  • Use verbal commands like stop, or stay back to help draw attention and discourage the attacker
  • If you are stuck in a trunk kick out the back taillights and wave your arm through the hole to alert for help

Next time your on a call or texting, finish it while your safe inside, not while your going to or from your car or  a location. You never know, it could just save your life.

Wow, this piece kicks butt!! I did not know that rapists target women with long hair (which I have) or ponytails, but it def. makes sense!! Also, I agree that women who appear distracted by using cell phones and texting while walking (which happens ALL THE TIME!!) look like easier targets for sexual assault, but for other crimes! I hope your readers follow your tips. I know I will! Rock on!! \m/*.*\m/

Do you know that texting really is a huge distractor. Never ever text while you are walking to or from your car it is so dangerous. Just walking in the mall you can tell people almost run into each others so you can imagine what this would look like to an attacker......EASY target, so be safe text indoors!
