Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens play edgy new roles in 'Spring Breakers' (Photos)

Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens may be known for their squeaky clean, teen sweetheart images, but all that may change soon.

Both actresses star in the upcoming "Spring Breakers" film, whose trailer was released Jan.18. In it, Gomez and Hudgens portray two college students seeking adventure.

As Rolling Stone said, "James Franco, Gucci Mane, Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens rage harder than any MTV Spring Break special."

Gomez and Hudgens are seen brandishing guns and wearing revealing bikinis. At one point, they rob a bank. Later, they get involved with drug lords and rappers, including James Franco (who plays a cornrow-wearing rapper) and Gucci Mane.

“They have to do different things to attract different audiences,” said Merle Ginsberg of The Hollywood Reporter. “This is going to get these girls a lot of attention.”

"Spring Breakers," rated R, is directed by Harmony Korine, who also wrote the script for the NC-17 rated "Kids" in 1995.

Gomez, 20, said of the film, “I think that it’s going to be very interesting and a little controversial."

Hudgens, 24, added, “We just really pushed it to the limit and achieved some amazing things.”

“Spring Breakers" is slated to hit theaters March 29.
