Selena Gomez says she was ‘lost’ for a year in ‘damaging’ relationship

Selena Gomez is kissing and telling, but she’s not exactly naming names. On Jan. 22, ABC News posted an excerpt from the pop singer’s Seventeen magazine cover story interview in which she talked about a “really bad breakup” she went through when she was 20 years old. (Translation: The Justin Bieber years.)

The former “Wizards of Waverly Place” star dished that she confided in fellow pop star Katy Perry about dealing with “ guys who are intimidated by strong girls,” and revealed that all of her boyfriend problems are “healable” by BFF Taylor Swift.

“I haven't found someone yet who could understand my lifestyle, support it, love me through it and not be threatened by it," she said. "It's hard. I do think I might scare some guys because I'm like, 'I want to change the world! I have dreams! What do you want to do?' But I only know how to be me."

In the March 2014 cover interview, Gomez revealed she’s “100 percent single, and I'm going to keep it that way for a while.”

But she did go into detail about how she once changed herself for a guy she liked: “I wasn't myself for a year,” she said. “I think that was really damaging … And there was a point where I kind of lost myself completely. I didn't smile as much, I didn't laugh as much … And when that one ended, it was just horrible. Because I didn't know where I was. But I got that back, and I was really happy — and my family was happy to have me back!

The pop singer didn’t elaborate on who the mystery guy was, but added, “ Everyone around me hated him. Except maybe one person, who thinks he is an idiot now. Everyone on set, family, friends, didn't like it. But even with everyone sitting me down, telling me it was horrible, I didn't listen to them. I think a girl has to go through that, because now I'm the strongest I've ever been. I dare someone to try to change me again. I've gotten so strong about that. It would never happen.”

While the “Come and Get It” didn’t drop names, we do know one guy who didn’t have her BFF’s seal of approval. Last year, Taylor Swift famously made her feelings known regarding her pal’s relationship with Justin Bieber. At the 2013 Billboard Music Awards, Swift was caught on camera rolling her eyes in disgust and sticking out her tongue as Gomez stopped to kiss the “Boyfriend” singer.
