In a new interview, Gomez talked about how Lovato has always been there for her. She commented, "I think what people forget is that she's actually been there for me, too. I've known her since…we were best friends since we were 7. We had a time where we did grow apart, but there's not a single person on this planet that knows me like she does," as Perez Hilton reported on December 18, 2013.
The "Come and Get It" singer considers Lovato to be like a sister. As she commented, "She goes into my darkest place, and she goes into my lightest most incredible memories. There's nothing like her and there's nothing like us, so I will always cherish her…she's like my sister. I'm very, very proud of her."
Their friendship made headlines earlier this month when Lovato visited a rehab center to give an inspirational talk. Having been through rehab herself in 2010, the "Neon Lights" singer gave a speech about her own journey to recovery.
Gomez was there for her during the speech, and Lovato reportedly thanked her for her continued support.
Although Gomez and Lovato appeal to similar fan bases, and have had relatively similar career trajectories, the "Spring Breakers" star insists that their friendship does not become competitive.
As Gomez explained, "we've known each other since we were 7. We home-schooled together, so I lived with her. And I am absolutely not...I'm not that way at all. Everybody does their own stuff, so it's good."
The "Slow Down" singer continues to root for her long-time friend. Gomez is proud of Lovato not only for overcoming deep personal struggles, but also for continuing to be a positive role model for young women.
As she explained, "I'm very proud of Demi and her being able to accept the challenges she went through, but also for staying a good role model to people who do struggle with the things that she's gone through."
