As E! News reported on December 27, 2013, Gomez struck back at one of her Instragram followers for encouraging another fan to cut herself.
Originally, user @keylimegomez had talked about wanting to die. Posting a picture of her sliced arm, the fan had written, "I just wanna die so all of this will end already. I feel so worthless. It's hard for me to ignore people."
The photo included a caption from Instagram user @selinagomesfan who responded, "cut, cut, cut cut!"
Gomez responded by calling out the fan, and taking a stand against internet bullying. As the "Come and Get It" singer wrote, "This is ridiculous. @selinagomesfan my fans don't do this to others. That's not what I stand for so you can gladly stop being a fan of me. I only encourage love, confidence, kindness. My love, @keylimegomez you are gorgeous just the way you are. Don't ever attempt that sh-t again. Ok? I love you too much for you to be doing that. PS. To all my fans, don't ever think this is fun to get attention. It's just wrong. I love you all just the way you are."
Bullying is an issue that hits close to home for the former Disney Channel star. Back in 2011, Gomez revealed that she had been bullied every day in elementary and middle school. As she explained, "I was bullied every second of every day in elementary and middle school. Obviously, people are going to bring you down because of your drive. But, ultimately, it makes you a stronger person to turn your cheek and go the other way."
The issue of bullying inspired her song, "Who Says." Although she experienced bullying herself, she doesn't feel like she was unfairly singled out. She realizes that this is something that everyone has gone through.
As she told Ellen DeGeneres, "this single really says a lot. It's already hard enough being 18, and figuring out who you are, and what you want to be, and people just constantly want to take you down."
As she explained, this song was for her fans. She continued, "so if anything, this son was for my fans, because it's hard enough, and this song is basically saying, 'we're all insecure. We all feel this way, but I think everyone's beautiful. It's not sad. It's fun. It's just life."
Glad to see that Gomez is continuing to take a stand against bullying!
